England’s James Anderson out for six weeks to recover from shoulder injury

England bowler James Anderson is to take six weeks off cricket to rest a shoulder problem before the Test series against India.

The 35-year-old has been managing a “long-standing right shoulder injury”.

Anderson played in both Tests of the drawn series against Pakistan, taking 9-172 overall.

“It’s wear and tear. Rehab makes it feel better so it’s just about managing it through certain periods,” Anderson said on Test Match Special.

“My shoulder has been an issue ongoing for the last couple of years and it is just looking after it the best way I can.”

The Lancashire seamer will miss County Championship matches against Worcestershire and Hampshire.

“The idea is to put in the work now and by the end of July there is a Championship game against Yorkshire that hopefully I will be ready for – then hopefully five Tests against India,” Anderson added.

The five-Test series against India takes place over six weeks from 1 August – a schedule Anderson described as “ridiculous”.

“It will be an intense and challenging period for all our bowlers,” said England coach Trevor Bayliss. “Therefore it’s vital that we ensure Jimmy goes into that series in the best possible condition.”
