LONDON: Ben Stokes and fast bowler Jofra Archer scripted 104 runs win for the hosts against South Africa in the World Cup opener played on Thursday at The Oval.
Ben Stokes shined with his phenomenal 89 off 79, he was well assisted by Eoin Morgan with his 57 off 60, after opener, Jason Roy smashed a quick 54 off 53.
Ngidi picked three wickets while Imran Tahir and Rabada managed to bag two, Phehlukwayo bagged one wicket.
Archer picked three wickets off 27 runs in his seven overs spell, while Plunkett and Stokes picked two each, while Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali picked one wicket each.
Ben Stokes was given Man of the Match award. “I had a bit of a panic on, I was a little further in that I should have been, but I have the nickname, “The Claw”, and luckily it stuck,” he said.
The star performer said that the game was on a ‘tricky wicket’. “Boundaries were hard to get away, but psychologically getting over 300 was a big thing. The unbelievable atmosphere, great turn-out for [my] first World Cup game,” he added.
