Women’s cricket team to receive one-day military cadet training: PCB

KARACHI: Pakistan’s women cricket team is slated to spend one day as military cadets during their high-performance conditioning camp in Abbottabad later this month, the Pakistan Cricket Board announced on Friday.

According to the PCB, some 30 women cricketers were called for a high -performance camp to be held August 16-31 in Abbottabad. On August 28, however, they would spend a day at the Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul.

In this regard, Chief Selector Urooj Mumtaz said: “We have organised a day at Military Academy Kakul which should help them learn and observe a different lifestyle while focusing on traits like determination, resilience and focus.

“The players will be spending the day as cadets to experience their daily routine. The idea is to give a different experience to the players and help them understand the benefits of a disciplined life and routine with strenuous training which should help broaden the scope of their thinking.

“This activity should help them learn and observe a different lifestyle while focusing on traits like determination, resilience and focus,” she added.

This would be the first time that women cricketers would receive military cadet training. The men’s cricket team, on the other hand, had their sessions at the same venue earlier.

The purpose of the camp, according to PCB, was to prepare the players for the upcoming domestic and international assignments. A gruelling international season awaits Pakistan with a series against Bangladesh and England, culminating — in March, next year — with the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s T20 World Cup to be played in Australia.

According to Mumtaz, it was important for the PCB to identify the top 30 players at the start of the season. “We are holding this camp to work on our skills in all three departments of the game,” she said.

“We have selected some junior players who can help form the ‘A’ team that will tour Sri Lanka in October. We will also focus on the players who are in contention for the national team’s series against the Bangladesh team,” Mumtaz added.
