Islamabad : The cricket boards of Pakistan and Sri Lanka have agreed to exchange the hosting of the Asia Cup 2020. The proposal to exchange the hosting of the event came up at a meeting of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) yesterday.
Pakistan is set to host the Asia Cup Cricket Tournament 2020 but due to coronavirus pandemic, the venue and schedule of the event have not been finalized yet. To address these issues, the ACC Executive Board met yesterday and proposed a change of host.
The ACC had announced that a final decision on the holding of the Asia Cup would be taken soon. Sources confirmed that the Pakistan Cricket Board is willing to give hosting rights to Sri Lankan cricket.
Pakistan is the host country of Asia Cup 2020 but due to coronavirus pandemic it is difficult to hold Asia Cup at the moment.
As India travelling to Pakistan is not a possibility, Pakistan was already thinking of hosting an event in Dubai or any other venue, which has now become even more difficult due to coronavirus pandemic .
Sources said that the PCB has agreed to exchange hosts this year, this time Sri Lanka could host the event while Pakistan could host the next Asia Cup which will be held in 2022.
It has just been declared a proposal on which both the boards have agreed but the final decision will be taken at the next meeting of the ACC.
PCB sources have confirmed the proposal and the PCB’s consent as the PCB wants cricket activities to be continuous in the current situation, hence the proposal to hold the event in Sri Lanka. Because the situation with regard to coronavirus pandemic is rapidly improving there.
According to Sri Lankan media, Sri Lankan Cricket President Shami Silva has said that the Asian Cricket Council has given the green signal to hold the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. We will seek permission from the government and then after getting permission, we will work out a strategy with the medical officials.
