Johannesburg, South Africa- The West Indies Women won a thrilling one-over eliminator in the second One International against South Africa Women at the Imperial Wanderers Stadium, to take a 1-0 series lead with two matches remaining.
In a rain-reduced match of 41 overs per side, West Indies won the toss and elected to bowl first. The West Indies bowlers proved up to the task set by their captain to restrict the South African batting. Hayley Matthews, Chinelle Henry, Karishma Ramharack, Shakera Selman and Shamilia all took two wickets each, as South Africa posted 160 all out in 40.4 overs. Captain Sure Luus top-scored for the home team with 46 off 52 deliveries.
Deandra Dottin continued with the fireworks from the first match as she smashed 37 off 31 deliveries which included five-fours and two-sixes. The West Indies middle-order fell quickly leaving 78 runs still needed for victory, with Chedean Nation and Chinelle Henry in the middle. The pair chipped away at the target with a 54-run partnership before Henry fell and Shakera Selman joined Nation. Looking set on victory with three runs needed, Nation was caught. Selman then got 2 singles before being trapped LBW with the scores tied.
Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin then smashed 25 runs in the ‘Super Over’ which was bowled by Shabnim Ismail. Dottin accounted for 19 of the 25 runs and Hayley 6. The South Africans were able to get only 17 runs from a very nervous Hayley Matthews over, thereby handing victory and a 1-0 series lead to the West Indies Women.
Speaking on the victory, Player of the Match Chinelle Henry said, “It is pretty good for the team. The point of coming here was the use these four matches as practice for the World Cup… the first game we played got abandoned, the team is in really good shape, today we got the win in the super over, so now it’s just about going back and improving on the little things… Batting with Chedean was really just about applying ourselves… and getting the team as close as possible to the score.”
The two teams will return to the same venue for the third match on Thursday for a day/night encounter. First ball is at 2pm local time (8am Eastern Caribbean Time/7am Jamaica Time).
