The softball gold medal game between USA and Japan drew the highest attendance of The World Games 2022. According to International World Games Association (IWGA), more than 10,000 spectators flocked to Hoover Met Stadium in Hoover, Alabama, to witness USA’s 3-2 victory over Japan that kept the gold medal and world title on home soil. “The Met was ELECTRIC. I will never forget last night,” MVP Haylie McCleney posted on Twitter.
The WBSC presented USA Softball legendary pitcher Monica Abbott with the WBSC’s Order of the Golden Diamond Award at the World Games 2022. “To be recognised worldwide for being able to have an impact — not only on young girls, but also other countries, pros, and people that are now at the prime of their career — it really means a lot to me,” Abbott said.
On the other news, the Puerto Rican Baseball Federation has named Eduardo Perez as the general manager of the National Team. Perez is being tasked with putting together the best Puerto Rican team possible to compete in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
The latest episode of the WBSC’s Global Game podcast offers a new perspective on the inaugural Baseball5 African Championship and the development of the five-on-five version of baseball/softball in Africa. “Baseball5 players come mainly from baseball and softball clubs,” said Susan Wanjiiku Mwangi, the Kenyan Baseball5 National Team manager. “We started introducing Baseball5 to U-12 children in schools, and so we are reaching through Baseball5 also kids who have no knowledge of baseball or softball”.
The Chile Baseball Softball Federation celebrated the first-ever game played in the country, which took place 105 years ago. Chile will host the 2023 Pan American Games and targets the event as a potential milestone in baseball and softball development.
Media registration is now open for the VI WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup, scheduled from 29 July to 7 August in Tainan, Taiwan. The registration deadline is Friday, 22 July. All members of the media, both local/national and international, who plan to cover the U-12 Baseball World Cup must apply for accreditation through the official WBSC Media Accreditation online platform.
And Venezuela (FEVEBEIS) will host the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Americas Qualifier in La Guaira from 12 to 21 August. The top four finishers will advance to next year’s World Cup group stage.
