DSO Peshawar Denies Access to Information on Sports Activities for Seven Months, DG Sports Remains Silent
Musarrat Ullah Jan
The District Sports Office (DSO) Peshawar, Pakistan, has been refusing to provide information on sports activities under the Right to Information (RTI) Act for seven months, even though the Director General Sports and the Ministry of Sports have remained silent on the issue.
On April 6, 2023, a person filed an RTI application with the DSO Peshawar requesting information on the number of tournaments organized in 2022, the names of players who participated, details of TADA issued to players, details of competitions organized in collaboration with the District Government Peshawar, a list of permanent and daily wage employees posted in DSO Peshawar for 2022, the number of employees laid off in 2023 and details of those who were appointed in 2022, and a list of clubs registered with DSO Peshawar and clubs to be registered in 2022.
The DSO Peshawar did not respond to the RTI application within the stipulated time of 30 days. On July 10, the person filed a second RTI application with the DSO Peshawar, requesting the same information. The DSO Peshawar again failed to respond within the stipulated time.
On October 11, the person filed an appeal with the Right to Information Commission (RTIC) against the DSO Peshawar’s non-compliance with the RTI Act. On October 17, the RTIC issued an order to the DSO Peshawar to provide the information requested within one week.
Despite the RTIC’s order, the DSO Peshawar has still not provided the information requested.
The DSO Peshawar’s refusal to provide information on sports activities is a violation of the RTI Act. The RTI Act is a landmark legislation that gives citizens the right to access information held by public authorities. The purpose of the RTI Act is to promote transparency and accountability in government.
The DSO Peshawar’s denial of information on sports activities is particularly concerning because it relates to a matter of public interest. Sports play an important role in society, and the public has a right to know how the DSO Peshawar is managing sports activities.
The DSO Peshawar’s refusal to provide information also raises concerns about corruption and mismanagement. It is possible that the DSO Peshawar is trying to hide information about irregularities in sports activities.
The RTIC should take strong action against the DSO Peshawar for violating the RTI Act. The RTIC should also investigate the DSO Peshawar for possible corruption and mismanagement.
Citizens should also be aware of their rights under the RTI Act and use it to demand information from public authorities.
Director General Sports Remains Silent
The Director General Sports and the Ministry of Sports have remained silent on the issue of the DSO Peshawar’s refusal to provide information under the RTI Act. This silence is concerning, as it suggests that the Director General Sports and the Ministry of Sports may be complicit in the DSO Peshawar’s violation of the law.
The Director General Sports and the Ministry of Sports have a responsibility to ensure that the DSO Peshawar complies with the RTI Act. They should take immediate action to direct the DSO Peshawar to provide the information requested by the person who filed the RTI application.
The Director General Sports and the Ministry of Sports should also investigate the DSO Peshawar for possible corruption and mismanagement. If any irregularities are found, the Director General Sports and the Ministry of Sports should take steps to hold the responsible individuals accountable.
