Delhi Bulls’s spectacular allround show outplay Chennai Braves
Abu Dhabi, 1st Dec 2023: Delhi Bulls produced a splendid allround show to outplay Chennai Braves by 65 runs in the 11th match of the Abu Dhabi T10 at the Zayed Cricket Stadium. With every seat in the stadium occupied by weekend spectators, Delhi Bulls posted 126 for 6 through fine knocks from Johnson Charles (40), James Vince (37) and skipper Rovman Powell (35)
Chasing the target, Chennai’s batting cracked before the tight bowling from Delhi Bulls to be bowled out for 61 in 8.5 overs. Fazalhaq Farooqi (2 for 8), Naveen Ul Haq (2 for 22), Muhammad Rohid (2 fr 14) and Ravi Bopara (2 for 4) were the destroyers of Chennai’s batting.
Delhi Bulls enthrall large turn out
Chennai Braves won the toss and elected to field. The match got off to a sensational start with Sam Cook dismissing the dangerous Delhi Bulls opener Quinton de Kock for 2, to the second ball of the match. Skipper Charith Asalanka pulled off a diving catch at mid-off.
One-drop Rilee Rossouw fell to the fifth ball of the second over from Junaid Siddique for 7. James Vince and Johsnon Charles began the damage repair with Vice hitting Imran Tahir for two sixes in the third over.
Charles did not spare Aayan Afzal Khan too and hit a six and two boundaries to take 19 runs off the fourth over. He went on to hit Obed McCoy too for two boundaries and at the half way mark, Delhi Bulls were 67 for 2.
Vince continued to score freely and hit Tahir again for a boundary and six in the sixth over to take 13 runs off that over. Junaid Siddique struck again to stop Vince by having him caught at long-on for 37. His knock off 14 balls had four boundaries and two sixes.
Charles hit Siddique for a beboundary to long-on. Skipper Rovman Powell began with a six off Nabi to over deep mid-wicket. Nabi dismissed Charles in the same over by having him caught by Aayan Afzal at deep mid-wicket for 40. His knock off 21 balls had four boundaries and two sixes.
Powell was at his aggressive best in the ninth over. He hit Sam Cook for a six off the first ball to deep mid-wicket and hit a boundary through the covers off the second ball. He then went on to hit the fifth ball for another six over mid-wicket into the crowd and another six to the same region off the last ball. Twenty-four runs were scored off that over.
Obed McCoy bowled a tight last over giving away just six runs and taking the wicket of Powell for 35 and Ravi Bopara for 2. Powell’s knock off 15 balls had one boundary and four sixes before he fell to a diving catch by Nabi at deep mid-wicket. Bopara got bowled by McCoy and Delhi Bulls posted 126 for 6 in 10 overs.
Chennai Braves batting cracks
Chennai Braves opener Jason Roy fell to the fourth ball of the first over from Fazalhaq Farooq for a duck. He got clean bowled to a delivery that came in and went through his defence. Bhanuka Rajapaksa edged the first ball over the slips for a boundary. Opener Kobe Herft got out to the second ball of the second over from Naveen Ul Haq, caught by Vince down the leg side for 4. Naveen also had Asalanka caught by Ravi Bopara at square leg for 4.
Muhammad Rohid removed Rajapaksa for 8 with the second ball of the third over. Worse was to follow as George Munsey got caught behind by wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock to the fourth ball from Rohid for a duck. Half the Chennai team were back in the dug-out for 18 runs in three overs.
Kai Smith became the sixth batsman to fall when Richard Gleeson had him caught by Powell at mid-on for 1. Mohammad Nabi hit Naveen for two boundaries in the fifth over to take the score to 36 for 5 but 91 runs more were needed from the remaining five overs. Bravo who was introduced for the seventh over got Nabi caught behind by De Kock for 25.
Sam Cook joined Afzal Khan but lasted only five balls to score seven runs before playing Fazalhaq on to his wicket. Bopara had Afzal Khan caught by Powell at long-on for 4 and McCoy clean bowled with a slower delivery for 1 to bowl out Chennai Braves for 61.
