In its announcement, the International Cricket Council (ICC) highlighted the fierce competition for this accolade, with four outstanding young talents in contention.
England’s Gus Atkinson, who made an impressive debut in Test cricket, joins Pakistan’s dynamic run-scorer Saim Ayub, West Indies pacer Shamar Joseph, and Sri Lanka’s record-breaking batter Kamindu Mendis on the shortlist.
The ICC lauded Ayub for his remarkable performances in 2024, noting that the left-handed opener appeared in nine ODIs, amassing 515 runs at an impressive average of 64.37. Ayub has established himself as a flamboyant and consistent presence at the top of Pakistan’s batting order, particularly excelling in the ODI format.
Shamar Joseph, a promising fast bowler from the West Indies, showcased his talent by claiming 29 wickets in eight Test matches during the year.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis, a versatile batting all-rounder, scored an extraordinary 1,451 runs in 32 matches, further cementing his reputation as a rising star
