PCB to offload Multan Sultans via open auction; Franchise set for new ownership in PSL 11
By Nawaz Gohar ; In a strategic shift following the record-breaking expansion of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to immediately initiate the sale of the Multan Sultans franchise through a public auction.
The sources indicate that the PCB is currently finalising the necessary paperwork to invite bids, with an official advertisement expected to be released shortly. This move marks a departure from the board’s previous plan to manage the team internally for one year.
The decision to expedite the sale follows the historic bidding process for the league’s two newest teams, Sialkot and Hyderabad. The immense interest shown by foreign investors and the high valuations achieved in those auctions have prompted PCB officials to capitalize on the current market momentum.
While the board had initially announced it would operate the franchise itself for the upcoming season, the growing appetite from international consortiums has led to this change in strategy. The PCB anticipates generating substantial revenue from the sale, further strengthening the league’s financial foundation.
Adhering to strict governance standards, the sale of Multan Sultans will be conducted via an open bidding process in compliance with Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) rules. This mirror’s the transparent auction model recently utilized at the Islamabad Convention Centre for the new franchises.
Key details regarding the auction include:
Eligibility: Former owner Ali Tareen will be eligible to participate in the open bidding, provided he meets the updated terms and conditions outlined in the upcoming advertisement.
Timeline: It is highly anticipated that Multan Sultans will take the field under new ownership by PSL Season 11.
League Expansion: With the addition of Hyderabad and Sialkot, PSL 11 will feature a total of eight teams, marking the largest field in the tournament’s history.
The successful sale of Multan Sultans is expected to set a new benchmark for existing franchises. Industry analysts suggest that the entry of fresh capital and potentially new international stakeholders will enhance the commercial value of the PSL, which has rapidly become the financial backbone of Pakistan cricket.
The PCB remains committed to ensuring a competitive and transparent transition of ownership to maintain the integrity and brand value of the Multan-based side.
