Peshawar’s Taekwondo Star Vaniya Craves Recognition Despite National, International Success
waniya, a rising Taekwondo star from Peshawar, has a story of dedication, talent, and a yearning for recognition. This young black belt has not only dominated provincial and national competitions but has also represented Pakistan on international stages in Thailand and Dubai.
Waniya, a class 8 student, balances her academic pursuits with her passion for Taekwondo. She began her journey five years ago, and with unwavering determination, has already amassed a collection of titles and honors. Her dedication is evident in her numerous medals from Peshawar district competitions, inter-school tournaments, and provincial championships.
Waniya’s national achievements include a bronze medal at the National Junior Championship. Internationally, she has competed in Dubai and Thailand, gaining valuable experience despite not medaling in Dubai. However, her trip to Thailand proved fruitful, bringing home a silver and two bronze medals – a testament to her fighting spirit and love for her country.
Despite her impressive accomplishments, Waniya feels a disheartening lack of encouragement from the provincial government and sports department. Following the recent Under-23 Games where Peshawar secured a gold and two bronze medals in Taekwondo, Waniya, a medalist herself, was not invited to the felicitation ceremony for the participants.
Waniya believes martial arts are crucial, especially for women’s self-defense. She emphasizes the need for government support and qualified coaches to address the shortage within the provincial sports directorate. waniya’s story highlights the need to celebrate and empower talented female athletes like her, who are paving the way for a brighter future of Taekwondo in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Pakistan.
