AIPS President Gianni Merlo Lauds Pakistan’s Olympic Success, Offers Help to Sports Journalists

The President of the International Sports Journalists Federation (AIPS), Gianni Merlo, has praised Pakistan, calling it a great country brimming with talented athletes.

He highlighted the success of Pakistan’s javelin thrower, Arshad Nadeem, who not only secured a gold medal but also set a new Olympic record. Merlo noted that this achievement, alongside the legacy of Pakistan’s hockey team, showcases the abundance of talent in the country.

The meeting, chaired by Federation President Amjad Aziz Malik, saw the participation of several key officials from Sindh, Punjab, Baluchistan, Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Gianni Merlo addressed the challenges facing sports journalism in today’s rapidly evolving world, particularly in the era of artificial intelligence. He emphasized that sports journalists face new threats and underscored the importance of advancing the profession to meet these challenges.

Speaking on the 100th anniversary of AIPS, Merlo proudly stated that the association’s centenary is a testament to its legacy as the voice of veteran sports journalists worldwide. He urged the community to protect their profession, particularly the younger generation of sports reporters, while maintaining journalistic freedom despite the rapid advancement of technology.

Merlo also pledged full support to Pakistani sports journalists, announcing assistance in obtaining AIPS cards for deserving members and offering resources to help overcome visa-related difficulties.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Asghar Azim, Secretary of the Pakistan Sports Writers Federation (PSWF), shared that the PSWF Executive Committee has made several important decisions.

These include hosting the annual awards ceremony and congress in Islamabad at the end of this month, and organizing a training program for young sports reporters in Karachi early next year.

The meeting also give approval of adding Mohsin Ali and Faisal Sahi to the executive committee and granting affiliation to the Rawalpindi Islamabad Sports Journalists Association.

Reports from the President, Secretary General, and Treasurer were also approved, with several measures being sanctioned for the welfare of sports journalists.

The executive committee formally approved amendments to the federation’s constitution, and President Amjad Aziz Malik finalized the action plan to ensure the participation of Pakistani delegates in the upcoming AIPS and AIPS Asia congresses.
