Former Bangladesh head coach Mahboob Ali dies during practice, bequeaths half his property for mosque
By Nawaz Gohar ; Former Bangladesh cricket team head coach and Dhaka Premier League coach Mahboob Ali passed away after suffering a fatal heart attack at the ground just ten minutes before the start of a match, while supervising players’ practice. His funeral prayers were offered at the Dhaka Cricket Ground.
Before the funeral, Mahboob Ali’s wife—who teaches at Dhaka University, one of Bangladesh’s most prestigious institutions—handed over a written will to Mufti Musa, who led the funeral prayers. According to the will, half of Mahboob Ali’s land is to be dedicated (waqf) for the construction of a mosque, while the other half belongs to his wife.
The will also stated that out of his ten shops in Dhaka, five belong to his wife and five to him, and the rental income from his five shops should be permanently used for the mosque’s imam’s salary, electricity bills, and other mosque expenses.
When the will was read aloud, mourners present at the funeral, including Bangladeshi cricketers, broke down in tears. Star cricketers Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim announced that Mahboob Ali was their mentor and that whatever recognition they have today is due to him. They pledged to fully fund the construction of the mosque, regardless of the cost.
According to Bangladeshi media, land for the mosque has already been set aside, and construction work will begin within the next three days.
