From Pakistan to England: Zafar Gohar eyes international return after gaining British citizenship

By Nawaz Gohar ; There is a long-standing perception in English County Cricket that spinners mature with age and that contributing effectively with the bat is essential to securing a permanent spot in the playing XI.

Zafar Gohar, the Pakistani-born left-arm spinner, has not only proven himself in both these departments but has now crossed a significant milestone by becoming eligible to represent England.

The 31-year-old Zafar Gohar—who previously represented Pakistan in one Test and one ODI—is now eyeing a spot in the England national side after acquiring British citizenship. His recent performances reflect continuous improvement on the County circuit; after parting ways with Gloucestershire in 2025 to join Middlesex, he has consistently demonstrated his prowess as an all-rounder.

While his wicket tally this season has been lower than expected, he has proven his utility with the bat by scoring 164 runs, including a notable innings of 83. Such performances underscore his evolution from a specialist spinner into a versatile all-rounder who can provide vital balance to any side.

Reflecting on the challenges of the craft, Gohar remarked that bowling spin in English conditions is demanding. However, he emphasized that success can be achieved through persistent hard work, maintaining disciplined line and length, and employing superior tactical strategies. He cited his effective bowling at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground—a venue traditionally unfriendly to spinners—as a major milestone in his career.

Discussing his international career, Gohar expressed disappointment over the limited opportunities afforded to him by Pakistan. He noted that despite his strong performances in County Cricket, he was not given the consistent run he felt he deserved, which ultimately led to his decision to pursue his future prospects in England.

Now, as a British citizen, Zafar Gohar remains optimistic. He is confident that if given the opportunity to represent the England national team, he will fully showcase his abilities and establish himself as an impactful all-rounder on the international stage.
