A New Chapter for Asian Sports Under Sheikh Joaan’s Visionary Leadership

As the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) enters a new phase of leadership, it is with great optimism that we extend our heartfelt congratulations to His Excellency Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani on his unopposed nomination and forthcoming presidency of the OCA, set to be formalised in January 2026 at the General Assembly in Tashkent. This is a pivotal moment for Asian sport, and the region awaits his leadership with great hope and anticipation.

We also pay tribute to the outgoing President, Raja Randhir Singh of India, whose dedication to Olympic values and regional cooperation has been instrumental in steering the OCA through complex times. The decision to appoint him as Honorary Life President is a fitting tribute to his service, wisdom, and commitment to Asia’s sporting legacy.

Sheikh Joaan’s nomination, endorsed by multiple National Olympic Committees, is not only a testament to his stature in international sports governance but also a recognition of Qatar’s growing role in global sports diplomacy. His platform, based on solidarity, digital transformation, sustainability, credibility, and financial resilience, reflects an understanding of the evolving challenges and responsibilities facing sports leadership in the 21st century.

His proven experience — from the successful hosting of the Doha 2019 World Athletics Championships to the visionary role in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 — demonstrates his ability to blend sports management with cultural diplomacy and legacy building. His leadership is expected to bridge the divides between tradition and innovation, ensuring inclusivity, youth participation, and gender equity across Asia’s diverse sporting landscape.

Yet, as this new era begins, it is essential that swift and strategic action be taken to fulfill the promise of his vision. The very first steps of his presidency should be to strengthen peacebuilding through sports, promote Olympic values of friendship, respect, and excellence, and forge solidarity among member nations, particularly in regions affected by political tensions or historical rivalry.

In this spirit, Pakistan and India, two of Asia’s most populous and historically significant nations, deserve Sheikh Joaan’s urgent attention and thoughtful intervention. Both countries possess enormous sports potential, rich Olympic histories, and passionate fan bases — but are often divided by political and diplomatic challenges. Sport can serve as a bridge for peace, and the Olympic Council of Asia must rise as a neutral and visionary platform to initiate such dialogue and collaboration.

To this end, I propose that Sheikh Joaan support a symbolic yet strategic initiative: the Dream Peace Olympic Arena — a joint sports and cultural project along the Pakistan-India border. This concept is envisioned as a neutral zone for peaceful competition, cultural exchange, and youth engagement, promoting better understanding between the two nations through the universal language of sport.

Such a facility would stand not only as a tribute to Olympic ideals but also as a historic milestone for the continent, reinforcing Sheikh Joaan’s position as a unifier and visionary. It would also strengthen his legacy and global appeal, particularly as Qatar emerges as a serious contender to host the 2036 Summer Olympic Games. By working toward unity and mutual respect between South Asia’s giants, he can solidify his reputation as a transformative leader in the Olympic movement.

As Sheikh Joaan assumes this prestigious responsibility, we remain confident that his leadership will open new doors for Asia’s sporting future — a future rooted in equity, innovation, cooperation, and peace. The continent, representing over 60% of the world’s population, looks to him not just for governance but for inspiration. Let this be the beginning of a sporting renaissance for Asia, under a leader with both global vision and deep cultural grounding.

We welcome His Excellency Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani to this new role and extend our full support for a journey marked by excellence, inclusion, and unity.
