ICC rejects accreditation for Bangladeshi journalists amid T20 World Cup controversy
By Nawaz Gohar ; Following the exclusion of the Bangladesh cricket team, Bangladeshi journalists will now also be absent from the mega event. The ICC has refused to grant accreditation to Bangladeshi journalists for the T20 World Cup.
The situation surrounding the Bangladesh team’s exit from the ICC T20 World Cup has taken a new turn, with the International Cricket Council (ICC) denying accreditation to Bangladeshi journalists for event coverage.
According to Bangladeshi media reports, the ICC has refused to issue credentials to journalists intending to cover the T20 World Cup. No journalists from Bangladesh were granted accreditation in either host nation, Sri Lanka or India.
Reports indicate that several journalists had their accreditation initially approved, only for it to be rejected later. One journalist shared with the media that they received a confirmation email on the 20th, followed by a subsequent email stating their accreditation had been revoked.
A senior Bangladeshi journalist stated that even when a team is not participating, the ICC typically issues accreditation to journalists from Associate Member nations.
Bangladeshi sports journalism organizations have decided to announce a future course of action soon, noting that the ICC has provided no explanation regarding the refusal of these credentials.
Meanwhile, Amzad Hossain, Chairman of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Media Committee, confirmed the denial of accreditation, stating that between 130 and 150 Bangladeshi journalists had applied.
“As far as I know, the applications for all Bangladeshi journalists have been rejected,” Hossain said.
It is worth noting that the ICC has yet to issue a formal explanation regarding the matter, causing the controversy to intensify.
To recap, the ICC previously replaced Bangladesh with Scotland in the T20 World Cup after rejecting Bangladesh’s security concerns regarding playing in India. While Pakistan supported Bangladesh’s request to move the matches to an alternative venue, doubts are now surfacing regarding Pakistan’s own participation in the World Cup.
