A Lifelong Dream Realized: World No. 1 T20I Bowler Abrar Ahmed sets sight on Asian Games gold

By Nawaz Gohar ; Pakistan’s mystery maestro Abrar Ahmed has etched his name into cricket royalty, officially ascending to the summit as the top-ranked bowler in men's T20 International cricket following the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings release. The 28-year-old spin wizard surged to the pinnacle with 736 rating points, dethroning Afghanistan’s star all-rounder Rashid Khan, while Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa settled into third place. With this monumental milestone, Abrar enters an elite pantheon of Pakistani cricket legends, becoming only the fifth bowler from the nation to achieve the top T20I ranking—joining iconic predecessors Shahid Afridi, Saeed Ajmal, Umar Gul, and Imad Wasim. Speaking exclusively to PCB Digital on the sidelines of Pakistan’s four-day training session in Karachi ahead of the 2026 Asian Games, an elated Abrar reflected on reaching the ultimate milestone of his career so far. "When you first pick up the ball, your absolute primary dream is to wear the Pakistan star on your chest. Once you accomplish that, the vision elevates to becoming the number one bowler in the world," Abrar shared. "To reach the top spot while representing my country fills me with immense pride. But this is just a milestone, not the destination. I will continue putting in the relentless hard work required to secure victories for Pakistan." The Secret Behind the Rise: Consistency and Team Trust Since making his T20I debut in April 2024, Abrar’s unpredictable variations have baffled world-class batters. However, the right-arm spinner revealed that sharpening his control was the critical breakthrough that accelerated his ascent to the top. "In my early days, I always had the variations, but masterclass consistency was the missing piece I needed to develop," Abrar explained. "I dedicated countless hours toward honing my line and length control, and that discipline has elevated my game to a completely different level." Abrar was also quick to attribute his stellar rise to the unwavering camaraderie within the national dressing room. "My teammates have been an incredible pillar of strength throughout this journey. They instill confidence in me before every match, reassuring me that I have the skill to deliver in crucial moments. Their belief in my abilities has played a massive role in where I stand today." Aiming for Asian Games Gold With global individual honors secured, Abrar’s focus shifts immediately back to silver—or rather, gold—for his country. He forms a key cog in the Pakistan squad preparing for the men's cricket competition at the Asian Games 2026. "Our sight is firmly locked on the Asian Games," Abrar asserted. "My target is to translate this form into match-winning spells, propel the team forward, and bring home the gold medal for Pakistan." Thanks to their high ICC ranking, Pakistan has earned direct qualification to the quarter-finals/semi-finals round alongside Asian rivals India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. The Green Shirts are set to begin their knockout campaign on September 28, following the conclusion of the initial group stage matches running from September 24 to 26.
