Pakistan vs. New Zealand Super Eight clash washed out; Semifinal race intensifies
By Nawaz Gohar ; The crucial Super Eight encounter between Pakistan and New Zealand in the T20 World Cup was abandoned on Saturday due to rain, resulting in both teams being awarded one point each. Following the washout, pressure has mounted on both sides as the race for the semifinals becomes increasingly tight. According to experts, every upcoming match has now effectively become a knockout for Pakistan. Pakistan is scheduled to face England on February 24, while New Zealand will take on Sri Lanka on February 25. Statistically, Pakistan’s record against England has not been encouraging. In T20 World Cup history, Pakistan has yet to defeat England, losing all three of their previous encounters. However, cricket analysts suggest that Colombo’s spin-friendly tracks could favor Pakistan's bowling attack, particularly their spinners. On the other hand, the England squad has yet to find its trademark aggressive form in this tournament. Pakistan’s ultimate test may come on February 28 against the hosts, Sri Lanka. Although Sri Lanka recently suffered an upset defeat at the hands of Zimbabwe, they remain a formidable opponent in their home conditions. Adding to the anxiety is the weather forecast in Sri Lanka, which indicates a continued threat of rain. If another Pakistan match is washed out or if the team suffers a defeat, their hopes of reaching the semifinals could be in grave danger. In the current scenario, Pakistan not only needs to win its remaining matches but also keep a close eye on the Net Run Rate and other group results. The Super Eight stage has reached a point where every over and every point is crucial; even a minor slip-up could prove disastrous.
