PHF conducts high-stakes selection trials in Karachi; Olympians oversee talent hunt
By Nawaz Gohar ; In a significant move toward revitalizing Pakistan’s national hockey structure, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) successfully conducted selection trials for both the Senior and Junior National teams at the Abdul Sattar Edhi Hockey Stadium in Karachi. The trials saw the participation of 60 promising athletes representing the Sindh and Balochistan regions. The event is part of a broader nationwide initiative by the PHF to identify and polish the country’s premier hockey talent for upcoming international fixtures. The selection process was conducted under the direct supervision of the Chairman of the PHF Management Committee, the legendary Olympian Islahuddin, alongside the iconic Olympian Hassan Sardar. The high-powered Selection Committee, which included renowned Olympians Samiullah, Nasir Ali, and Kashif Jawad, carried out a meticulous evaluation of the participants. The presence of these hockey stalwarts underscored the federation's commitment to a transparent and merit-based selection process. To ensure a comprehensive assessment of the athletes' physical conditioning and technical prowess, the trials were divided into four intensive sessions. Each session featured a 30-minute match format, allowing selectors to observe the players’ endurance and tactical decision-making under pressure. Key technical input was provided by the coaching staff, including: Manzoor-ul-Hassan: Head Coach, National Senior Team Ayaz Mahmood: Head Coach, National Junior Team The coaches collaborated closely with the selection committee to identify "future heroes" who possess the technical skillset required to compete at the highest global level. A spokesperson for the Pakistan Hockey Federation reiterated that the primary objective of these regional trials is to unearth hidden talent from across the country. By broadening the scouting net to Sindh and Balochistan, the PHF aims to build a robust talent pipeline that can restore Pakistan’s status as a powerhouse in international hockey. The federation is expected to announce the short-listed candidates from these trials following the conclusion of the final selection phases in other regions.
