KARACHI: The return of international cricket turned sweeter for fans at the National Stadium in Karachi on Tuesday as Pakistan scripted a sure-footed whitewash against the visiting West Indies in the three-match T20I series.

The West Indies scored 153-6 — their highest total of the series — with Andre Fletcher (52) scoring the only half-century on this tour for the visitors, while Denesh Ramdin cracked 42 of 18 balls.

But Pakistan chased down the 154-run target in 16.5 overs with eight wickets in hand as in-form opener Babar Azam scored another half-century (51).

Fakhar Zaman provided early momentum to the Sarfraz-led team with his 40 runs off 17 balls, including six fours and two sixes at a strike rate of 235.29.

Middle-order batsmen Hussain Talat and Asif Ali took the innings to the victory stand with their 31-run partnership off 28 balls.

Pakistan won the first match by 143 runs and the second by 82 runs. The three matches were all played in Karachi.

This was Pakistan’s third T20I series win by 3-0 margin—the most by any team. No other team has managed to clean sweep a three-match T20I series more than twice.

It was also the green shirts’ 17th win in the last 20 games and the seventh series win since Sarfraz Ahmed took over as skipper. The green shirts have never lost a series since the wicketkeeper-batsman took over the captaincy in 2016 after World T20.

Second Innings

Babar Azam (51) carried forward the momentum built by Zaman, the in-form batsman posted another half-century in his records, before getting dismissed by Odean Smith.

The breathtaking strokeplay of Fakhar Zaman (40) finally came to an end as the opener edged the ball of Rayad Emrit to the keeper when he tried to flat-bat a delivery towards the leg side.

Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam curtailed the 154 run chase with their power hitting. The visitors’ bowling lineup was neutralised by the openers, who took full advantage of the batting powerplay.

First Innings – Fletcher, Ramdin lift Windies to fighting total

Fletcher scored 52 off 43 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes on 120.93 strike rate.

Samuels timely assisted the Windies opener with his score of 31 runs.

Successive dismissals by the Pakistani bowlers halted the hosts’ momentum in the middle of their innings but the late blitz by Ramdin (42) extended the score to 153 runs.

Legspinner Shadab Khan took two wickets, while Faheem Ashraf, Muhammad Nawaz and Usman Khan Shinwari bagged one each.

Pakistan made two changes in its squad as Shaheen Shah Afridi and Usman Shinwari have made their place in the final-playing 11 while fast bowlers Muhammad Amir and Hasan Ali are being rested.

But Denesh Ramdin slammed down the Pakistani death-over bowling with his cameo blitz. In just 18 balls, the tailender smashed 42 runs, with three sixes and four boundaries.

What appeared to be the last straw that broke the Windies resistance was run out of Andre Fletcher by Muhammad Nawaz. He departed on the score of 52 runs.

Pakistan made a sudden comeback in the game as Shadab Khan took timely wickets of Samuels and debutant Andre McCarthy.

Andre Fletcher and Marlon Samuels consolidated and put Pakistan on a defensive position by neutralising the hosts’ bowling attack.

Windies opener Chadwick Walton departed on a duck on the very first ball of Muhammad Nawaz’s over as he skied the ball in an attempt to hit over covers.

Afridi is making his debut tonight, Wasim Akram handed him his debut cap.

Pakistan has dominated the series, winning the first match by 143 runs and the second by 82 runs. Pakistan’s top order has been brilliant with an unbeaten 97 by Babar Azam in the second match and Hussain Talat scoring 41 and 62 during the series.

LAHORE: A record-breaking 77 runs off 27 deliveries by opener Kamran Akmal against Karachi Kings on Wednesday propelled former champions Peshawar Zalmi into the final of the Pakistan Super League on Wednesday.

Babar Azam fell after a resilient 45-ball 63 in Karachi Kings’ chase of 171 in the rain-reduced second eliminator at the Gaddafi Stadium.

Peshawar Zalmi were given an early breakthrough by pacer Sameen Gul who removed opener Mukhtar Ahmed for 1 off 3, after Kamran Akmal’s record-breaking fifty propelled Peshawar Zalmi to 170-7 in the 16 overs-a-side match.

Just as the required run rate loomed bigger than ever, Babar Azam and Joe Denly took charge and nicked some neat boundaries to make for an interesting chase.

Kamran Akmal’s blitz

Put in to bat by Karachi Kings, Kamran Akmal smashed the fastest fifty in the history of PSL, surpassing Islamabad United’s Luke Ronchi to reach his feat with a powerful six off just 17 balls.

Despite looking set for another century this season, Kamran was out after hitting 77 off 27 balls as Ravi Bopara provided some respite to Karachi after the team’s decision to bowl first.

Andre Fletcher was the first to be dismissed by a hapless-looking Karachi, going after a 30-ball 34.

Bopara claimed his third wicket when he caught and bowled Mohammad Hafeez for 13, briefly pegging back Peshawar’s run fest.

Liam Dawson, who was Peshawar’s highest scorer in the first eliminator against Quetta Gladiators, fell after run-a-ball 13 in an eventual breakthrough for Usman Khan Shinwari, whose nightmare with the ball continued.

Skipper Darren Sammy, still struggling with a knee injury, managed 23 runs off 12 balls. Saad Nasim was run out after a sluggish 2 runs, while Wahab Riaz was out on golden duck.

Ravi Bopara led the wickets tally with 3 for 35. Tymal Mills claimed 2 wickets in return for 23 runs.

A wet outfield delayed the start of the knockout match, after intermittent rain most of the day. The game started at 8:15pm PST and was reduced to 16 overs a side.

Peshawar are without opener Tamim Iqbal, who is battling an injury. Karachi are without star all-rounder Shahid Afridi who is out due to a knee injury. The team also does not have the services of recovering skipper Imad Wasim, and is being led by Mohammad Amir.

Peshawar Zalmi beat Quetta Gladiators in a last-ball thriller last night, cementing their place in the second eliminator of against Karachi Kings.

Peshawar and Karachi played each other twice during the group stages of the tournament, with Karachi Kings winning the first match by five wickets and Peshawar Zalmi winning the second by 44 runs.
