5-member Pakistan Boxing Team Announced for Commonwealth Games Birmingham

Karachi –  Pakistan Boxing Federation has announced the names of Pakistan’s 5-member boxing team for the Commonwealth Games Birmingham. According to Pakistan Boxing Federation General Secretary Colonel (R) M.Nasir Ejaz Tung, Zohaib Rasheed (Pakistan Navy) in flyweight, Muhammad Ilyas (Pakistan Army) in featherweight, Salman Baloch (Pakistan Army) in welterweight, Nazirullah (Pakistan Army) in light heavy weight, while. In the lone female boxer featherweight. Mehreen Baloch will be the first female boxer in Pakistan’s boxing history to compete in the Commonwealth Games.

Pakistan sports contingent consisting of 59-members will participate in the upcoming 22^nd Commonwealth Games scheduled to be held from 28th July to 8th August 2022 in Birmingham, UK in which athletes from the 72 countries will compete. The opening ceremony will be held on 28th July, 2022 and the Closing Ceremony is due to take place on 8^th August 2022. The players will participate in 12 disciplines including Aquatics (swimming) Athletics, Para-Athletics, Boxing, Badminton, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Squash, Table Tennis, Weightlifting and Wrestling.

Vice-President, POA Syed Muhammad Abid Qadri Gillani will serve as Chef-de-Mission while Director General Col. (Retd.) Muhammad Asif Zaman will function as Deputy Chef-de-Mission. Federal Minister for Inter Provincial Coordination, Ehsan-Ur-Rehman Mazari will also be part of the contingent to represent the country in the Commonwealth Inter Ministerial meeting.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) will back only those athletes who have bright chances to win medals to bring laurels for the country. Moreover, PSB throughout the year established training camps for effective participation in the mega international events.
