Parry’s fairytale uplifts France as Sabalenka and Osaka set up a clay-court blockbuster

Paris: There is something inherently magical about the first week of Roland Garros fading into the second. The pretenders have been weeded out, the courts are deeply scarred by sliding clay, and the heavyweights begin to cross paths.

Saturday on the Parisian dirt delivered exactly what makes this tournament theater of the highest order: an unforgettable local fairytale, historic milestones, and a grueling five-hour modern epic.

The loudest roars of the day belonged to Court Philippe-Chatrier. World No. 92 Diane Parry, carrying the immense weight of home expectations, produced a performance layered with grit and tactical elegance to stun sixth seed Amanda Anisimova.

In a grueling three-hour physical examination, the 23-year-old Frenchwoman refused to back down. After splitting the first two sets, the deciding set pushed both players to their absolute limit. Backed by a raucous, flag-waving Parisian crowd, Parry held her nerve in the definitive tiebreak to seal a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(3) triumph.

With her victory, Parry becomes the lone Frenchwoman left in the singles draw, moving into the last 16 of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career where she will face Poland’s Maja Chwalinska. While Parry provided the romantic storyline, the women’s draw also locked in a absolute blockbuster of a fourth-round matchup.

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka put on a masterclass of pure power, steamrolling Australia’s Daria Kasatkina 6-0 in a flawless opening set before navigating a tighter second set to close it out 7-5. Crucially, this marked Sabalenka’s 100th victory since ascending to the world number one ranking.

To meet the top seed, former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka had to dig into the deepest reserves of her competitive spirit. Sporting a striking, gold-sequined outfit, Osaka was pushed to the absolute brink by fearless American teenager Iva Jovic. After splitting two intense tiebreak sets, Osaka’s big-match pedigree shone through, securing a decisive late break to cross the finish line 7-6(5), 6-7(3), 6-4 after nearly three hours.

Over in the men’s draw, Italy enjoyed a historic, contrasting day of celebration. 10th-seeded Flavio Cobolli made quick work of American prodigy Learner Tien, executing a clinical 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 victory to halt Tien’s winning streak and cruise into the fourth round.

But the match that will be talked about for years took place on the outer courts. Former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini reminded the tennis world of his legendary resilience, outlasting Argentina’s Francisco Comesana in a staggering five-hour gladiator battle.

In an agonizing final-set match tiebreak, both men stared down multiple match points. Bruised but unbowed, Berrettini finally converted his opportunity to take the breaker 15-13, collapsing to the clay in equal parts exhaustion and ecstasy.

With a draw that has seen top seeds fall like autumn leaves, Roland Garros 2026 is completely wide open. If week one was about survival, week two is going to be a pure war of attrition. Keep your eyes on the Sabalenka-Osaka clash; that is a final disguised as a fourth-round match.

MIES (Switzerland) – The second window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Qualifiers featured plenty of exciting storylines as national teams from across the globe continue their battles for a spot in the 32-team field at next year’s spectacle to be staged in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.

Results from the Qualifiers have led to some changes in the latest FIBA World Ranking Men, presented by Nike, on all continents. In Europe, France, Greece, Iceland and Georgia are moving up; South Sudan, DR Congo and Senegal in Africa; Brazil in Americas; Kazakhstan and Lebanon in Asia.

The most recent World Cup 2023 Qualifying Window brought one movement in the top five. France swapped spots with Slovenia, going from five to No. 4 on the back of their two wins over Portugal – 94-56 at home and 69-56 in Portugal. Those two victories secured Les Bleus qualification for the Second Round of European Qualifiers. Slovenia meanwhile lost twice to Finland, 86-76 on the road and then 83-79 at home.

The other change in the top 10 saw Greece move ahead of Italy for the No. 9 spot. The Greeks came up with two wins over Turkey – 72-71 at home and 76-67 in Istanbul – while Italy suffered a double-overtime 107-105 defeat in Iceland before bouncing back for a 95-87 victory at home over the northern Europeans.

Iceland’s historic win over the Italians saw them jump two spots to No. 44 – with Georgia the other larger European nation moving up two spots, jumping to No. 36 after defeating North Macedonia twice.

South America’s second-best team Brazil made a one-spot jump to No. 14 after knocking off Uruguay 85-66 and Colombia 119-73 – both games at home – to lock up a spot in the Second Round as well.

In Asia meanwhile, Kazakhstan had a strong window with wins at Iran (73-69) and Bahrain (95-48) to reach the Second Round with a 4-0 mark and jump two spots in the World Ranking to 68. Lebanon rose one spot to 54 after a 74-63 defeat in Jordan and an 81-68 victory in Saudi Arabia.

The biggest mover in the men’s World Ranking was South Sudan, who had a World Cup Qualifiers debut for the ages with wins over Rwanda (68-56), FIBA AfroBasket 2021 champs Tunisia (72-64) and Cameroon (74-68) in the window played in Senegal. That performance saw South Sudan jump six spots to No. 76. Congo DR also jumped multiple places, rising two spots to No. 79 after beating Kenya 66-56 and Senegal 62-57 before losing 62-51 to Egypt.

Paris: – Angry Lille supporters invaded the pitch and tried to attack players at the end of their struggling side s 1-1 draw with Montpellier in France s Ligue 1 on Saturday.

Some of the fans who swarmed onto the pitch managed to shout insults and even aim kicks at players, including Nicolas Pepe, the Ivory Coast forward whose goal had earned Lille a draw in the game at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

The supporters — around a hundred in total — then gathered by the entrance to the tunnel, below where incredulous directors were watching on, but were held back by stewards.

The result left Lille in the relegation zone — champions as recently as 2011, the northern side are at serious risk of going down to the second tier, a level they have not been at since 2000.

President Gerard Lopez, the Luxembourg-born businessman who bought the club last year, was in the stands and television cameras caught him shaking his head in disbelief at the scenes that marred the end of the game.

He had hoped the appointment of Marcelo Bielsa ahead of this season would help the club compete towards the top end of the table but the enigmatic Argentine was sacked late last year due to the team s poor form.

Bielsa has contested his sacking, seeking as much as 18 million euros ($22.2m) for wrongful dismissal.

Meanwhile, the club s financial situation was deemed so unhealthy that French football authorities recently inflicted a transfer embargo.

Christophe Galtier was appointed coach during France s winter break but has only managed two wins in 10 league games so far.
