ISLAMABAD: The West Indies cricket team has arrived in Pakistan for their first Test series on Pakistani soil in 18 years. The team landed in Islamabad on Monday for a two-match Test series.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the arrival and shared details of the schedule. The West Indies will begin their preparations with a three-day practice match against the Pakistan Shaheens from January 10 to 12 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

The two Test matches will be played at the Multan Cricket Stadium, with the first starting on January 17 and the second from January 25 to 29.

The Pakistani squad will commence their training on January 7 at the Islamabad Club, while the visiting team will hold intensive sessions on January 8 and 9 to gear up for the series.

This tour is a crucial moment for cricket in Pakistan as it signifies the West Indies’ first longer-format series since their three-Test tour in 2006.

The West Indies have visited Pakistan three times since 2018 for limited-overs matches, but this is the first longer-format series in almost 20 years.

Pakistan and the West Indies have faced each other in 54 Test matches, with Pakistan leading the head-to-head record with 21 wins compared to the West Indies’ 18, while 15 matches ended in draws.

The last Test series between the two teams took place in the Caribbean in 2021, which concluded in a 1-1 draw.

Since April 2018, the West Indies have made three visits to Pakistan for limited-overs matches, including an ODI series in June 2022 and two T20I series in April 2018 and December 2021.

The security situation in Pakistan has seen significant improvement in recent years, leading to the return of major international teams.

Pakistan is now gearing up to host the ICC Champions Trophy in February-March 2025, marking its first ICC tournament on home soil since co-hosting the ICC ODI World Cup in 1996.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Cricket West Indies (CWI) is aware that earlier today, voice notes were circulated on social media, and in sections of the regional broadcast media, suggesting that there is a rift within the West Indies Senior Men’s team. Contrary to the unsubstantiated statements, containing unfounded and mischievous allegations, CWI is satisfied that there is no discord between the Team Captain and any member of the West Indies team.

CWI President Ricky Skerritt said: “I view this as a malicious attack on the credibility of the West Indies Captain, designed to sow division within our team that has just recorded three very impressive T20I performances against very strong opponents, including two outstanding wins and one heroic comeback to get within one run of victory. This clear attempt by well-known mischief makers to discredit the Captain and to derail the Team’s momentum in the ongoing Betway T20I Series should not be tolerated or encouraged.”

West Indies lead England 2-1 in the five-match Betway T20 International Series at Kensington Oval in Barbados, the fourth and fifth matches of the series will be played at the same venue on Saturday and Sunday. First ball is 4pm (3pm Jamaica).
