ST JOHN’S, Antigua– West Indies Women return to action on home soil when they host New Zealand Women in an eight-match white-ball tour from September 16 to October 6 in Antigua.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed that the three CG United One-Day Internationals (ODI) and five T20 Internationals (T20I) will be played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. The CG United ODI Series is scheduled for September 16, 19 and 22 and matches will start at 9.30am local time, 8.30amJamaica time. The T20Is are scheduled for September 26 to October 6. All of the T20Is will start at 1.30pm local time, midday Jamaica time, other than the 4th T20I on Tuesday, October 4 which will start at 10.00am local time, 9.00am Jamaica time.

For the CG United ODI Series, West Indies will be looking to build on the progress after reaching the semi-finals of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand earlier this year. The team will then look to the five T20I matches as part of their preparations for the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa in January.

Courtney Walsh, West Indies Women’s Head Coach, welcomed the tour and said they will have a keen eye on the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. “I am very happy that we will be hosting New Zealand in the West Indies. They are a very competitive team, and this will make for a great series for our team. As it comes just after we’ve had the Women’s regional tournaments and the Women’s CPL, it will be a great fillip for our players,” Walsh said.
Walsh added, “We are currently holding another specialist camp including some new players, and after the Women’s CPL we will have a second camp in Antigua. In addition, the Lead Selector was with the West Indies U19 Women’s team for their series in Florida and have identified some exciting prospects to consider. So, we should have enough cricket before the New Zealand Series starts. Every series that we play we want to win, and we will be playing a positive brand of cricket. We will also have an eye on the T20 World Cup around the corner. So, this will give the squad a chance to showcase all their skills, and also give us, the coaching staff, a chance to look at what depth we have.”

Fans can purchase tickets online on the Windies Tickets service, presented by Mastercard at tickets.windiestickets.com, from 3:00pm Wednesday August 17. For all matches, adults can purchase general admission tickets online at $5.00USD or $15EC, with free admission for children under the age of 16 when accompanied by a paying adult. Seniors benefit from half price tickets. The stadium ticket office will open on the day of the 1st CG United ODI.

All eight matches will be streamed live on the Windies Cricket YouTube channel. Live ball-by-ball scoring will also be available on the  www.windiescricket.com Match Centre.

The West Indies pulled off another upset as they beat England by seven runs to secure their first-ever ICC Women’s World Cup victory over the defending champions.

After edging out hosts New Zealand in their opening encounter, West Indies were 81 for no loss before Sophie Ecclestone’s incredible 21st over saw three wickets fall to halt their momentum.

But Shemaine Campbelle and Chedean Nation put on 123 for the fifth wicket to set England 226 to win, six more runs than Heather Knight’s side had ever chased down to win a World Cup game.

The 2017 winners stuttered frequently in reply before a 61-run partnership for the ninth wicket between Ecclestone and Kate Cross seemed to be taking them to victory, however two wickets in four balls in Anisa Mohammed’s 48th over snatched it for the West Indies and left England winless from their first two games.

The West Indies won the toss and chose to bat but rode their luck after England dropped five catches.

Deandra Dottin was saved when Lauren Winfield-Hill put her down off the very first ball of the game before Tammy Beaumont dropped Hayley Matthews on eight off the bowling of Anya Shrubsole.

Matthews responded by dispatching Brunt for two fours in the seventh over and punished Cross for failing to hang on to a caught and bowled chance when she was on 33 by crashing her for six two balls later.

Ecclestone’s spin was introduced in the 17th over, but it was in her third over that she made a real impact.

Her 13th delivery was unlucky for Matthews as she was caught at third by Shrubsole, departing for 45 from 58 balls including two sixes.

Three balls later, Dottin had to go after being run out by a direct hit from Danni Wyatt as Kycia Knight went for a run that was never on.

Captain Stafanie Taylor was then sent back for a golden duck and in five balls the West Indies had slipped to 81 for three and two new batters were at the crease.

Campbelle broke the boundary drought, striking the first four for 10.2 overs but Knight was then caught by Wyatt who rocked back as she held on to a powerful shot to leave the West Indies 98 for four after 26.1 overs.

Campbelle and Nation went about rebuilding, and benefitted from a bucketful of extras, Brunt conceding five wides for the second game in a row.

More dropped catches and a missed run out hampered England, Ecclestone’s figures of four maidens, three for 20 overs a lone bright spot from a disappointing display in the field.

The 100 partnership between Nation and Campbelle came up off 139 balls Nation contributing 38, Campbelle 53 and extras the rest.

Nat Sciver got the breakthrough with a low full toss as Campbelle chopped on for 66 from 88 before Chinelle Henry fell for a two-ball duck as the Windies clawed their way to a hard-fought 225 for six.

After bagging a duck in the opening defeat to Australia, Winfield-Hill’s batting woes continued but this time she could consider herself very unlucky as Dottin took an early contender for catch of the tournament, an outstretched right hand in a full superwoman pose dismissing the opener for 12.

Captain Heather Knight was then caught behind for five off the bowling off Matthews, the initial check for a stumping showing Knight got bat on ball.

The West Indies also missed chances but they were able to capitalise when it really counted.

Sciver, a centurion last time out, went for just two sending a slog sweep to mid-on before Amy Jones’ desire to get the run chase going backfired, Matthews taking a good low catch to reduce England to 72 for four.

Beaumont survived an lbw review on 44 but her reprieve did not last long as she was trapped in front by Mohammed for 46 to deepen England’s troubles.

A promising partnership of 60 between Sophia Dunkley and Danni Wyatt came to an end when the former went for a big shot and was caught by Taylor.

Wyatt would soon needlessly follow with Brunt also departing as England lost three for two.

But the tailenders put England into a winning position before Cross was cruelly run out at the non-striker’s end to bring Shrubsole to the crease and when she was bowled by Mohammed the West Indies could celebrate a second nail-biting win.

Harry Book produced a sensational unbeaten century as Lahore Qalandars further consolidated their number-two spot in the HBL Pakistan Super League 7 with a crushing 66-run win over Islamabad United at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore on Saturday night.

The 22 year-old England batter Brook (player of the match) scored the maiden T20 century of his young career with a series of scintillating shots that brought rich entertainment for the vociferous – packed to capacity home crowd that backed the home side with incredible passion.

Brook came into bat with the Qalandars in a spot of bother at 12 for three with Phil Salt (2), Kamran Ghulam (0) and Mohammad Hafeez (2) back in the dugout inside the first 15 balls of the match.

But Brook was unfazed as he started the repair work with the leading run-getter of the tournament Fakhar Zaman (51 off 41 balls, four fours, one six). The duo added 101 runs for the fourth-wicket in a mere 63 balls. Fakhar registered his sixth 50-plus score of the season. The left-hander took his runs tally for the HBL PSL 7 to 521 before falling to Zahir Khan.

Brook reached his 100 off 48 balls and finished unbeaten on 102 (49 balls, 10 fours, five sixes) with Qalandars posting 197 for six in their 20 overs.

Faheem Ashraf who took two early wickets for United finished with three wickets for 28 in his four overs, he was the most successful United bowler in an otherwise Brook dominated Qalandars innings.

Meanwhile United’s heavy defeat has done considerable damage to their net run-rate and has provided Gladiators an outside chance of qualifying as the fourth team in the play-offs if they beat Karachi Kings tomorrow and United suffer another heavy defeat in their last group match (Peshawar Zalmi) which is also a part of the Sunday double-header.

Other performers

United had pinned their hopes on Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a quick start, the Afghanistan opener hit two fours and a six in his 20 off 11 balls before falling to Shaheen Shah Afridi. The Qalandars skipper then dismissed the other opener Mubasir Khan on the next ball as United were set on the back foot.

Liam Dawson contributed 31 off 26 balls before falling to Qalandars in-form speedster Zaman Khan. United never got going after the early hiccups and kept losing wickets at regular intervals in their mammoth chase. Danish Aziz scored an unbeaten 30 but that only helped United reduce the margin of their defeat. United finished their 20 overs at 131 for nine.

Leg-spinner Rashid Khan signed-off for the Qalandars for the HBL PSL 7 season with two wickets for 19 in four overs. Shaheen, Zaman and Haris Rauf took two wickets each. Zaman, Qalandars emerging pick for the season has now taken his wickets tally for the tournament to 15.

Player of the match Harry Brook: “It was good fun to be out there and try post a good score for the team. I have always said that I want to be a match winner and bat in the hardest situations. It is good fun, the crowd last few games has been phenomenal and it is great fun to play in front of them, these have been one of the biggest crowds I have played in front of and I have really enjoyed the experience.”

Scores in brief:

Lahore Qalandars 197 for 6, 20 overs (Harry Brook 102 not out, Fakhar Zaman 51; Faheem Ashraf 3-28)

Islamabad United 131 for 9, 20 overs (Liam Dawson 31, Danish Aziz 30; Rashid Khan 2-19, Shaheen Shah Afridi 2-28)

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa- West Indies Women opened their tour to South Africa on winning note when they defeated a South Africa Women’s XI by 53 runs in a warm-up match at the Imperial Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

Batting first West Indies Women posted 202 all out from 46.5 overs. Shemaine Campbelle top-scored with 42 off 48 deliveries, which included 5-fours, followed by Rashada Williams with 30 off 73, inclusive of 3-fours. Nadine de Klerk returned the best bowling figures for the South Africa Women’s XI with 7-0-27-3, followed by Tumi Sekhukhune with 5-1-20-2.

Tazmin Brits and Delmari Tucker top-scored for the South Africa Women’s XI, with 32 and 24 respectively. Bowling for West Indies Women, Cherry Ann Fraser caused a middle order collapse in her spell, finishing with 4-0-11-3. While Shamilia Connell wrapped up the innings with 2-0-13-2 and a direct-hit run out.

West Indies Women’s Head Coach Courtney Walsh was pleased with the performance but says the preparations are not completed with a win. Walsh said, “I thought the girls did well, it was good to get out in the middle and play today. We haven’t played a lot of cricket of late so even though it was a practice match, the atmosphere and the execution was pretty well. Most of the girls had decent knocks and a decent bowl as well. What I was most impressed was the two Super-Over practice scenarios we had as well, with how precise and good the execution was. This win will give us confidence going into the series (yes) but also for the World Cup.”
