In a recent development, the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has taken a proactive step by forming a dedicated committee aimed at overseeing the installation of the new turf at the prestigious Lala Ayub Hockey Stadium. The committee’s establishment was officially announced on August 8th, accompanied by the inclusion of key figures such as Deputy Director Shahid Islam and hockey umpire Haroon Al Rasheed.
This comprehensive committee also comprises officers from the PSB headquarters, entrusted with the responsibility of conducting a meticulous inspection of the newly laid turf in Peshawar. The inspection will extend to evaluating various aspects, including concerns raised about the turf as well as other associated components. A detailed report is expected within a week, shedding light on the reservations expressed by the Hockey Association.
Responding to earlier issues raised about the turf’s quality, the PSB’s move has prompted swift action. Officials representing the turf laying company made their way to the Lala Ayub Hockey Stadium yesterday to assess the situation. Six months ago, several complaints surfaced regarding uneven settling of the turf, wrinkles appearing on its surface, sub-standard support behind the goal post, malfunctioning sprinklers, and the use of subpar plastic pipes.
An investigation into the matter revealed that only some of the pipes surrounding the turf were replaced, while the machinery’s pipes were left untouched. Additionally, the removal of iron bars and the installation of cement sheets were performed without addressing the concerns raised by this Rs 10 crore project.
However, the narrative has shifted with the unveiling of the new committee by the PSB. Just a day ago, two representatives from the turf laying contractor visited the Peshawar Sports Complex to gather information about the issues plaguing the sprinkler system’s functionality.
It was discovered that simultaneous operation of both motors is essential for the sprinklers to function optimally. Yet, a notable challenge emerged due to the shared power line, which also serves the swimming pool and the air conditioning system within the table tennis arena hall. This arrangement limits the power supply to these vital machines.
In a contrasting observation, the contractor’s representatives were seen making efforts to address the wrinkles on the turf, although no specific guidance was provided regarding the sub-standard wood, sprinkler functionality, and plastic pipes.
With the newly formed committee set in motion, hopes are high for a comprehensive resolution to the concerns raised surrounding the Lala Ayub Hockey Stadium’s turf.
The initiative not only showcases the PSB’s commitment to top-tier sports infrastructure but also emphasizes their dedication to ensuring the highest standards for Pakistan’s sporting facilities.
