By Nawaz Gohar ; The global governing body of football, FIFA, has confirmed an unprecedented surge in interest for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, receiving more than 500 million ticket applications during the most recent sales window.
This staggering figure serves as a testament to the sport’s unparalleled global reach as it prepares for its largest-ever edition.
The announcement comes at a pivotal time when fans had been voicing concerns regarding high ticket prices, suggesting that the allure of the tournament remains unshaken by financial debates.
Unsurprisingly, the highest volume of applications originated from the three host nations: the United States, Mexico, and Canada. However, FIFA revealed that outside of the hosts, Germany led the world in ticket requests, highlighting an extraordinary level of enthusiasm among European supporters.
The sales phase, which ran from December 11 until this past Tuesday, introduced a new system allowing fans to apply for individual tickets for specific group-stage matches and particular teams for the first time in history.
FIFA clarified that due to the overwhelming demand, tickets will be allocated through a random selection draw (ballot).
Notification Date: Successful applicants will be notified starting February 5, 2026.
Second Chance: Fans who are unsuccessful in this round will have another opportunity during the second sales phase, which is expected to remain open through the duration of the tournament.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his delight at the record-breaking figures, saying: “To receive half a billion ticket applications in just over a month is more than just demand; it is a global declaration of love for football. This confirms that the 2026 World Cup will be the biggest event in sporting history.”
In response to global protests over rising costs, FIFA has introduced a new, lower-priced ticket category labeled the “Supporter Entry Tier.” This initiative is designed to ensure that “loyal fans” have a pathway to witness their teams in action across all 48 participating nations.
Key Details of the Low-Cost Tier:
Availability: Applies to all matches held across Canada, Mexico, and the USA from June 11 to July 19.
Limited Capacity: FIFA admitted that these affordable tickets are in limited supply. Only 8% of a stadium’s total capacity is reserved for the fans of the participating teams, and of that 8%, only 10% will fall under the new low-price category.
Despite these limitations, the sheer volume of applications suggests that the 2026 World Cup is on track to become the most-watched and most-attended sporting event the world has ever seen.
