Rawalpindi’s Representation in PSL: Hanif Abbasi announces formation of ‘Rawalpindi Tigers’
By Nawaz Gohar ; Seeing a lack of direct representation for Rawalpindi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), prominent businessman and politician Hanif Abbasi has stepped forward. The Rawalpindi native has announced the formation of the “Rawalpindi Tigers” and shared details regarding the team’s composition.
Currently serving as the Federal Minister for Railways, Hanif Abbasi is primarily a leading figure in the pharmaceutical industry. After a long career in politics, he has now entered the world of cricket.
In a press conference held alongside Atif Rana, CEO of Lahore Qalandars, the Rawalpindi-based federal minister officially announced the “Rawalpindi Tigers” project. He declared his intention to eventually bring this team into the PSL.
“We aim to make Rawalpindi Tigers a world-class team,” Abbasi stated. Having contested National Assembly elections from at least two constituencies in the city, he emphasized that the proposed team would exclusively feature talent from Rawalpindi. “We will only include youth who hold a Rawalpindi domicile,” he clarified.
Abbasi praised Lahore Qalandars for their pivotal role in promoting cricket among the youth. “The Pakistani public has a romance with cricket. I have been a fan of Lahore Qalandars from the beginning,” he said, adding that CEO Atif Rana would provide guidance in the formation of the Tigers.
The Minister further highlighted his commitment to sports infrastructure, noting that he has already provided sports facilities in local schools and colleges. “We are providing a massive platform for youth based on merit. Trials will begin on February 14th and 15th,” he announced.
Beyond the men’s team, Hanif Abbasi revealed plans to form a women’s team as well, noting that a world-class squash court has already been established at Fatima Jinnah University. He concluded by stating that no one has nurtured Pakistani talent quite like Lahore Qalandars and claimed that his constituency boasts more cricket grounds than any other.
