Record-Breaking Podium: Italy Winter Olympics to feature most expensive medals in history
By Nawaz Gohar ; Athletes reaching the podium at the ongoing Winter Olympics in Italy are set to receive more than just eternal glory, they will be walking away with the most financially valuable medals in the history of the Games.
This record-breaking valuation is not due to an increase in the physical weight of the awards, but rather the unprecedented surge in the global market prices of gold and silver over the recent years.
According to financial data highlighted by international media, the cost of raw materials has reached staggering heights. Since July 2024, the price of gold has surged by approximately 107%, while silver has seen a meteoric rise of 200%.
As a result, a single Gold Medal in these Winter Games is now valued at approximately $2,300. This is double the value of the gold medals awarded at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. Similarly, the value of a Silver Medal has climbed to roughly $1,400, a three-fold increase compared to just two years ago.
Despite being called “Gold,” the medals are primarily made of silver. A standard Olympic Gold Medal weighs 506 grams, containing only 6 grams of pure gold as plating, with the remainder being solid silver.
Meanwhile, the Bronze Medals, composed mostly of copper and weighing 420 grams, remain the least expensive at a raw material value of about $5.60. However, even these have seen a relative increase in significance due to the overall rise in industrial metal costs.
Economic analysts attribute the spike in gold prices to major central banks increasing their reserves and widespread global geopolitical uncertainty. The surge in silver is credited to heightened interest from retail and institutional investors.
With over 700 medals to be distributed across disciplines such as Alpine Skiing, Ice Hockey, and Figure Skating, the organizing committee is overseeing one of the most expensive trophy hauls in sporting history. Experts predict that if current trends continue, the medals for the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics will be even more costly.
