By Nawaz Gohar ; Pakistan ended its 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign on a bitterly disappointing note, securing just a single medal despite fielding a contingent of 21 athletes across various sports disciplines.
The nation’s lone accolade came from boxer Fatima Zahra, who secured a medal in the women’s boxing competition, saving the country from a total medal shutout.
This marks Pakistan’s worst showing at the Commonwealth Games in 36 years.
The last time the country suffered a similarly dismal campaign was in 1990, when the contingent returned home without a single medal. It also echoes the 1998 Games, where Pakistan managed to capture only a solitary silver medal.
Hopes were high for top prospects Arshad Nadeem and judoka Shah Hussain Shah, both of whom were widely considered Pakistan’s strongest medal contenders heading into the Games. However, both athletes delivered underwhelming performances.
On the final day of the event, Shah Hussain Shah’s campaign came to a swift end after he was knocked out in his very first bout. Meanwhile, track and field star Arshad Nadeem was unable to replicate his previous success, adding to the contingent’s general dismay.
The lackluster performance highlights a stark drop off compared to the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where Pakistan claimed a total of seven medals, including two golds.
The dramatic decline in podium finishes is expected to raise serious questions regarding sports administration, athlete training programs, and the allocation of resources for non-cricket sports across the country.
