By Nawaz Gohar ; British-Pakistani boxing legend Amir Khan held a high-profile press conference at the Islamabad Sports Complex, officially announcing “Azadi Fight Night,” a major international boxing event scheduled for September 5, 2026.
The initiative aims to provide local Pakistani fighters with an international platform to showcase their talent on the global stage. Speaking at the announcement, Khan highlighted a long-term strategy centered on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Addressing Pakistan’s long-standing drought in the sport, Khan noted the sobering reality that no Pakistani boxer has qualified for the Olympic Games since the 2004 Athens Olympics.
To break this stagnation and integrate domestic talent into the international mainstream, the event will also mark the official inauguration of the newly constructed Amir Khan Boxing Academy at Jinnah Stadium. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place prior to the start of the matches on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at 6:00 PM.
In a major announcement for sports enthusiasts, Khan confirmed that entry to the stadium will be completely free of charge. For global viewers unable to attend in person, the entire event will be broadcast live worldwide on Geo Super.
“Azadi Fight Night” will feature 10 professional bouts, showcasing top-tier talent from across the country, including prominent Pakistani boxer Usman Wazir. The fight card will highlight both international-level Pakistani boxers and female fighters taking to the ring.
Prominent international boxers present at the press conference included Osman Aslam from England and Haris Aftab Khan from Denmark. During the media briefing, Khan also personally met with and congratulated Fatima Zahra, the historic female boxer who secured Pakistan’s first-ever boxing medal at the Commonwealth Games. Khan assured her of full support and access to advanced technical training through his academy moving forward.
Khan drew comparisons with global trends, stating that while major boxing events are expanding rapidly worldwide—including in neighboring India—the true, natural talent resides in Pakistan. Drawing from his personal visits to neighborhoods like Lyari in Karachi, he emphasized that the nation’s vast population holds immense athletic potential.
However, he stressed that regular government patronage and structural support are essential to bring this talent to international standards. He recalled previous discussions with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz focused on upgrading sports infrastructure and promoting athletic development nationwide.
Reaffirming his commitment, Khan stated that despite his global commitments, his primary focus is now dedicated to Pakistan, with the goal of grooming future champions for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Sponsorship opportunities remain open to local enterprises, with all proceeds generated from the event slated to be reinvested directly into youth sports development and charitable initiatives across Pakistan.
