From FIFA to the ICC: 2026 set to be a landmark year for international sports
By Nawaz Gohar ; The year 2026 is set to be an extraordinary period for sports enthusiasts worldwide, featuring a relentless schedule of global championships across cricket, football, hockey, and multi-sport events. From the historic expansion of the FIFA World Cup to a packed ICC calendar, the next twelve months promise high-octane action for fans globally.
Cricket: A Year of World Titles ;
The sporting festivities begin this month with the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, hosted jointly by Zimbabwe and Namibia from January 15 to February 6. A total of 16 teams will compete in this prestigious youth tournament.
Immediately following the junior event, the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will take center stage from February 7 to March 8. Co-hosted by defending champions India and Sri Lanka, this edition marks the first time 20 teams will participate, divided into four groups. Notably, Pakistan is scheduled to play all its matches in Sri Lanka, with the knockout stages, including the semi-finals and final, slated for Colombo. Later in the year, the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup will be hosted by England during June and July.
The Global Stage: FIFA and Olympics ;
The most anticipated event of the year, the FIFA World Cup 2026, will run from June 11 to July 19. Spanning the United States, Canada, and Mexico, this tournament features a record 48 teams competing for the ultimate prize in football.
In the realm of multi-sport excellence, Italy will host the Winter Olympic Games from February 6 to February 22, followed by the Winter Paralympics in Milan from March 6 to March 15. Additionally, the Commonwealth Games will return to Glasgow from July 23 to August 2. This edition will feature a streamlined program of 10 sports, notably excluding cricket, hockey, and squash.
Hockey, Tennis, and Club Football ;
The 16th Men’s Hockey World Cup is scheduled for August 14–30 in Belgium and the Netherlands, featuring the world’s top national field hockey teams.
Tennis fans can look forward to the Australian Open in Melbourne this January, followed by the prestigious Wimbledon championships in England from June 29 to July 12. Furthermore, the European football season will reach its pinnacle with the UEFA Champions League Final in Budapest, Hungary, on May 30.
