Kiwis crush Sri Lanka to knock hosts out; Keep semi hopes alive
By Nawaz Gohar: In a crucial Super Eight encounter of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, New Zealand defeated host Sri Lanka by 61 runs in a one-sided contest, eliminating them from the tournament. With this victory, the Blackcaps have kept their hopes of reaching the semifinals alive.
Chasing a target of 169 at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, the Sri Lankan team could only manage 107 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Sri Lanka’s start was dismal as Matt Henry clean-bowled Pathum Nissanka on the very first ball of the innings. Henry struck again in his next over, dismissing Charith Asalanka (5), leaving Sri Lanka reeling at 6-2 in 2.1 overs.
For New Zealand, Rachin Ravindra delivered a devastating spell, tearing through the Sri Lankan middle order. He claimed the wickets of Kusal Mendis (11), Pavan Rathnayake (10), Captain Dasun Shanaka (3), and Dushan Hemantha (3), reducing the hosts to a dire 59-6. For Sri Lanka, Kamindu Mendis top-scored with 31, while Dunith Wellalage played a resilient knock of 29.
Earlier, New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 168-7 in their 20 overs. The Kiwis had a solid start, but brilliant bowling by Maheesh Theekshana (3 wickets) in the middle order put New Zealand in a tough spot at 84-5.
However, Captain Mitchell Santner and Cole McConchie established a valuable half-century partnership for the seventh wicket to take the team to a strong total. Santner played an aggressive knock of 47 off 26 balls, including 4 towering sixes, while McConchie remained unbeaten on 31.
Following this result, the points table situation in Group 2 has become even more intriguing. New Zealand has strengthened its position in the race for the semifinals by securing crucial points, while Sri Lanka has become the first major team to be eliminated on their home turf.
