Nipah Virus outbreak puts 2026 T20 World Cup in jeopardy

By Nawaz Gohar ; The spread of the dangerous Nipah virus in India has cast a shadow of uncertainty over the hosting of the 2026 T20 World Cup.

The 2026 T20 World Cup faces serious threats due to the outbreak of the Nipah virus in India, raising questions about the organization of the mega-event. In West Bengal, India, five individuals—including two nurses and a doctor—have tested positive for the Nipah virus, and their conditions are reported to be critical.

To contain the spread, authorities have placed at least 100 people in quarantine and further tightened safety protocols. This dangerous virus has begun to spread just weeks before the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to begin on February 7. If the severity of the virus increases, it could have grave implications for the event’s preparations, logistics, and security arrangements.

The Nipah virus is a deadly pathogen transmitted from bats to humans, with a mortality rate as high as 75%. Currently, there is no effective treatment available for the virus worldwide.
