Pakistan returns to global football governance as MNA Syeda Amna Batool joins FIFA Reforms Committee

By Nawaz Gohar ; In a landmark development for Pakistan’s sporting and diplomatic standing, Member of the National Assembly Syeda Amna Batool has been appointed to FIFA’s influential Institutional Reforms Committee, making her the sole Pakistani representative currently serving on any FIFA committee.

Her participation in the committee’s plenary session and related meetings in Qatar marks a major vote of confidence by world football’s governing body in Pakistan’s renewed institutional credibility.

The appointment is widely viewed as a breakthrough moment for Pakistan football, reflecting FIFA’s trust in the country’s reform trajectory and its commitment to transparent, autonomous, and merit-based governance. It also signals Pakistan’s re-entry into meaningful global football decision-making after years of administrative uncertainty and international isolation.

This progress comes against the backdrop of sustained political support from the government led by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, which has placed the revival of football high on its sports diplomacy agenda. The Prime Minister’s recent engagement with AFC President and FIFA Senior Vice President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to ensure an independent football federation,

nationwide grassroots development, and the hosting of international events. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has publicly acknowledged and appreciated Pakistan’s renewed commitment to football governance and reform.

Equally significant have been the efforts of Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) President Syed Mohsen Gilani, who over the past six months has actively worked at both domestic and international levels to stabilize, revive, and modernize the federation.

His engagement with stakeholders and global bodies has helped restore confidence following a prolonged period during which Pakistan football suffered from administrative paralysis and FIFA sanctions due to external interference. Together, these developments symbolize Pakistan’s “return to credibility” within the international football community.

The government now views football not merely as a competitive sport but as a strategic tool for youth engagement, social cohesion, and national development, particularly as more than 60 percent of Pakistan’s population is under the age of 30.

This vision includes structured collaboration with FIFA, measurable development targets, and a strong emphasis on inclusive and gender-responsive governance—reflected in milestones such as the appointment of the country’s first female manager for the men’s national football team.

Within FIFA, Syeda Amna Batool’s role will focus on strengthening institutional reform mechanisms and ensuring effective implementation. Her presence on the committee positions Pakistan as a constructive and responsible stakeholder in global football governance, while also opening new avenues for long-term development, transparency, and international cooperation.
