Power-hitting revolution: T20 World Cup shatters records with 780 sixes
By Nawaz Gohar ; The T20 World Cup has witnessed an unprecedented display of batting prowess, shattering previous records with a staggering total of 780 sixes hit throughout the tournament. This figure represents a significant increase compared to the previous edition.
According to data released in media reports, the last edition of the tournament saw a total of 517 sixes. The current tournament witnessed a massive 51% surge, reaching 780 maximums. These statistics underscore a definitive shift toward more aggressive batting strategies in modern T20 cricket.
The tournament was characterized by massive totals, with the 200-run mark being surpassed a record 14 times. Furthermore, several teams posted totals exceeding 250, setting new benchmarks for scoring in the format. In a historic final, India set a formidable record by scoring 255 runs against New Zealand. Notably, three of the totals exceeding 250 were scored by the host nations.
The overall strike rate for the tournament reached 134, believed to be the highest in the event’s history. Experts suggest these figures reflect the growing trend of relentless aggression in T20 batting.
Commenting on the high-scoring nature of the event, former England captain Michael Vaughan remarked that while the batting displays were spectacular, the crucial balance between bat and ball has been compromised.
On the other hand, New Zealand coach Rob Walter noted that if fans are enjoying this style of cricket, there is little room for objection, though he emphasized the importance of maintaining a competitive edge in the game.
