Salman Ali Agha accepts responsibility for Pakistan’s T20 World Cup exit

By Nawaz Gohar ; Pakistan cricket team captain Salman Ali Agha has officially accepted responsibility for the team’s disappointing exit from the ICC T20 World Cup. Speaking at a post-match press conference, the skipper admitted that the squad failed to meet expectations throughout the tournament,

marking the fourth consecutive major event where Pakistan has failed to reach the semifinal stage. He candidly acknowledged that the team’s inability to make correct decisions under high-pressure situations was a primary factor in their downfall.

Salman Ali Agha emphasized that if the team continues to succumb to pressure, such results are inevitable. He noted that the responsibility for the defeat rests with both the captain and the coach, as they were directly involved in crucial decisions regarding player selection and the final playing XI.

He explained that while the team combination is always formed in consultation with the coach based on ground conditions, the execution on the field fell short.

Reflecting on individual performances, the captain admitted that, with the exception of Sahibzada Farhan, the batting lineup struggled to deliver significant impact. When questioned about his future as captain, Salman Ali Agha stated that making a hasty decision would be overly emotional.

He indicated that he intends to take a few days upon returning home to reflect and consult before making a final determination regarding his leadership role.

The captain singled out Fakhr Zaman’s innings as extraordinary, noting that such aggressive batting is exactly what is required during the powerplay. He further commented that while the strategy to reach the semifinals was clear before the match, in hindsight, Fakhr Zaman could have been utilized in the first four matches, despite his inconsistent form leading up to those games.

The exit comes despite Pakistan securing a narrow 5-run victory over Sri Lanka in their final Super 8 encounter. Batting first, Pakistan posted a formidable 212 for 8 in their allotted 20 over. In response, Sri Lanka was restricted to 207 runs.

However, the victory was bittersweet; to qualify for the semifinals on net run rate, Pakistan needed to bowl Sri Lanka out for 147 runs or less. Because the bowlers were unable to contain the opposition within that specific limit, the Green Shirts were officially eliminated from the tournament.
