The Rolling Journey of Tenpin Bowling in Pakistan
By Sports Friend, Shahid Ulhaq
The formal journey of Tenpin Bowling in Pakistan began in 1999 with the establishment of the Pakistan Tenpin Bowling Federation (PTBF). Affiliated with the Asian Bowling Federation and World Bowling, and recognized by the Pakistan Sports Board, the federation has since staged a consistent series of national championships that now stand at the 17th edition.
Over the years, several remarkable players have emerged. Among men, the most prominent name is Ejaz-ur-Rehman, who made history as the first three-time national singles champion. His international highlight came at the 2009 QubicaAMF World Cup in Malaysia, where he was ranked among the top scorers
. Beyond his performances, Ejaz also served as Secretary-General and later as President of PTBF, playing a leading role in organizing and sustaining domestic competitions. Alongside him, Ghazanfar Bilal, Daniyal Shah, Ali Suria, Sikandar Hayat, and Anas Asif have consistently made their mark on the national stage.
In the women’s category, Amna Saldera has dominated with multiple titles, while Ayesha Saldera and Erum Jehan have also been regular medalists at national tournaments. Other names such as Amina Roshi, Noor, Shaista, and others have kept the women’s competitions alive and competitive.
These achievements stand out despite persistent challenges. Chronic shortage of funds, inconsistent support from authorities, and most importantly, the absence of a dedicated national bowling center have hampered the sport’s progress. On several occasions, Pakistan even missed international events due to financial constraints.
Still, the growth of Tenpin Bowling in Pakistan remains a bright spot. National Championships, the Pakistan Open, and the Azadi Cup have kept the sport vibrant and attracted new talent. Rising stars such as Ghazanfar Bilal show that the future of the game can be promising if given proper patronage.
Ejaz-ur-Rehman’s contribution, both as a champion player and as a determined administrator, deserves special mention. His passion and persistence have kept Tenpin Bowling alive in Pakistan against all odds.
The journey has been far from easy, but the resilience of players and organizers proves that with proper facilities and state support, Pakistan can turn Tenpin Bowling into a sport of international recognition and pride.
