Untapped Sports Talent in Bajaur: Young Athletes Ready to Raise Pakistan’s Flag on the Global Stage —
But Government Support is Crucial
by: Ghani Ur Rehman ; Bajaur, a strategically important tribal district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is not only rich in geographical significance but also home to extraordinary sporting talent.
Hidden in its soil are young, passionate, and hardworking individuals capable of shining on international sports platforms. From cricket, football, and hockey to volleyball, basketball, karate, gymnastics, and various martial arts, the youth of Bajaur possess remarkable potential.
It is important to recall that Bajaur, like other tribal regions, was once severely affected by terrorism. While many areas in the country remained peaceful, the people and youth of Bajaur stood on the front lines, playing a vital role in restoring peace.
Their sacrifices remain a part of our national memory. Thus, this region deserves not just security attention but focused investment in its social, educational, and athletic development.
Unfortunately, despite their potential, these talented youngsters lack proper platforms, coaching facilities, and government backing. There is a severe shortage of professional coaches and essential sports infrastructure. In most areas of Bajaur, there are no sports grounds or gymnasiums, and where facilities do exist, they are outdated and insufficient.
If the government and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Department recognize their responsibilities, regions like Bajaur cannot and should not be ignored. Meaningful efforts must be made to promote sports in the area through the following practical steps:
Establishment of a sports complex in every
tehsil, equipped with multi-sport facilities.
Deployment of qualified coaches in cricket, football, karate, martial arts, and other popular sports to ensure proper training.
Regular organization of sports events at district, provincial, and national levels to provide exposure and opportunities for local talent.
Integration of sports into educational institutions as a core component to help identify talent at an early age.
Promotion of success stories from Bajaur to inspire and motivate the next generation.
There is no doubt that with the right support and guidance, the youth of Bajaur can emerge as future champions, raising Pakistan’s flag high in international arenas. It is time for the government, sports bodies,
and civil society to open their eyes and view such regions not merely through the lens of security, but as symbols of hope, development, and national pride.
