Asia Cup Cricket and the Case for a Neutral Venue: Dream Peace Olympic Arena

By Shahid Ulhaq ;

The Asia Cup cricket tournament is once again caught in the political crossfire between India and Pakistan. While India is officially the host, Pakistan’s matches are to be played in the UAE under a hybrid model.

This arrangement may appear as a compromise, but in reality, it carries immense financial and logistical burdens. Host countries are compelled to shoulder extra expenditures—millions of dollars more than originally planned—while fans, especially from Pakistan, face daunting barriers of visa denials, costly travel, and inflated broadcasting prices.

For millions of cricket lovers, the game is not just entertainment but a part of their DNA, an emotional bond passed across generations. Yet, political divides continue to keep fans apart, depriving them of the chance to witness the game live with their families across borders. This repeating cycle of conflict demands a visionary solution that goes beyond temporary fixes.

That solution lies in the Dream Peace Olympic Arena—a neutral, permanent sporting complex at the zero line of the Pakistan-India border. This concept, first introduced by the writer in 2009 at Peace CAMP-09 in Abu Dhabi, envisions a stadium built not for one country but for both nations—a shared space where teams compete without diplomatic obstacles and where fans can gather without visas, celebrating their love for cricket and all sports.

Such a venue would not only cut the cost of hybrid hosting models but also remove the recurring disputes over neutral grounds. More importantly, it would transform sport into what it should always be: a bridge of peace and understanding. Imagine families on both sides of the border sitting together in the same stands, united by cheers for sixes, wickets, and the timeless spirit of cricket.

This idea now calls for action. The PCB and BCCI must take the lead by forming a joint working group to present the Dream Peace Olympic Arena as a viable, sustainable solution. The ACC and ICC should extend their support,

commissioning feasibility studies and securing initial funding. Global organizations such as the IOC and United Nations must recognize the initiative as a model project for peace and development through sports, providing legitimacy and resources to turn this dream into reality.

Cricket has always had the power to unite hearts where politics divides. The Dream Peace Olympic Arena is not just a vision—it is the need of the hour, a bold step towards harmony that can outlive generations and show the world that sports can indeed be the greatest catalyst for peace.
