Bangladesh secure ‘direct entry’ for 2028 T20 World Cup: ICC
By Nawaz Gohar ; The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that Bangladesh will participate directly in the 2028 T20 World Cup, effectively ending ongoing speculations within cricket circles.
According to a statement released by the ICC, Bangladesh’s participation has been secured based on their global team rankings. It is worth noting that Bangladesh’s absence from the recent T20 World Cup had led fans to question whether the team would be able to secure a direct spot in the next edition.
According to event regulations, all teams that reached the Super Eight stage have automatically qualified for the 2028 T20 World Cup. New Zealand had already secured a spot as a co-host, while Australia—despite failing to reach the Super Eight—will also feature in the tournament as a host nation.
The ICC stated that out of the 20 teams in the World Cup, eight will join through the qualifying rounds. Of the remaining teams, nine positions have already been finalized based on performance and host status. The final three spots will be determined according to the ICC T20 International rankings on March 9.
Currently, the positions of Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Ireland remain stable. Bangladesh is ranked 9th, Afghanistan 10th, and Ireland 12th. Since no international matches are scheduled before March 9, their rankings are unlikely to be affected.
Consequently, the participation of Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Ireland in the 2028 T20 World Cup is now guaranteed.
