FIFA rejects Iran’s request to move 2026 World Cup matches from US
MEXICO CITY: The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has officially declined a request from Iran to relocate its 2026 World Cup matches from the United States to a neutral venue. The decision has cast a shadow over Iran’s participation in the upcoming tournament, as Tehran cites significant security concerns.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed on Friday that FIFA cited “logistical hurdles” as the primary reason for denying the request. Iran had formally petitioned to have its group-stage fixtures moved to Mexico, pointing to the escalating geopolitical tensions involving the U.S. and Israel.
Despite these concerns, football’s global governing body maintained that the tournament schedule remains fixed. FIFA emphasized that matches will proceed at previously designated venues across the three host nations: the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
According to President Sheinbaum, FIFA’s refusal was based on a complex web of pre-existing commitments, including:
Logistical Frameworks: The intricate planning of team travel and base camps.
Commercial Agreements: Binding contracts with sponsors and partners.
Ticketing & Broadcasting: Global schedules and sales that are already in advanced stages.
The Iranian football federation argued that playing on American soil is currently “unsafe” given the regional conflict. Interestingly, U.S. President Donald Trump has also previously touched upon security considerations regarding the Iranian team’s presence in the country.
“FIFA has made it clear that the tournament schedule will not be altered. The matches will be played in the United States as planned,” stated President Sheinbaum during a press briefing.
While the 2026 World Cup is a historic collaboration between three North American giants, Iran’s involvement is now in a state of flux. Iranian officials have hinted that they may reconsider their participation if their security grievances are not addressed, though a final decision has yet to be announced.
