Amir demands Salman Mirza’s inclusion, questions Shaheen’s role after India defeat
By Nawaz Gohar ; Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has launched a scathing critique of the national selection committee following Pakistan’s heavy defeat to India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, calling for in-form pacer Salman Mirza to replace Shaheen Shah Afridi in the playing XI.
Speaking on a private television channel after Sunday’s group-stage loss to arch-rivals India national cricket team, Amir questioned the continued selection of senior players despite underwhelming performances in the ongoing tournament.
He argued that Salman Mirza has consistently delivered whenever given an opportunity, yet remains overlooked, while Shaheen continues to feature despite struggling to make an impact in this World Cup.
“Shaheen is undoubtedly talented, but selection should be based on current form, not reputation or past glory,” Amir remarked. He added that apart from the 2021 T20 World Cup, Shaheen has not produced defining performances in major ICC tournaments.
Amir also criticised team combination and strategy, saying that inconsistent performances make it impossible to build a settled and competitive XI. He expressed concern over the underutilisation of Faheem Ashraf, who, according to him, has been reduced to a mere fielding all-rounder without being fully trusted with either bat or ball.
Amir’s criticism reflects deeper structural issues. Pakistan cricket must embrace meritocracy and long-term planning. Persisting with out-of-form seniors risks stagnation, while promising players like Salman Mirza represent the future.
If Pakistan are to rebuild as a formidable T20 force, bold and performance-driven decisions are no longer optional as they are essential.
