Civil unrest in Mexico: FIFA issues major statement regarding World Cup relocation
With less than four months remaining until the kickoff of the FIFA World Cup, the worsening security situation in co-host nation Mexico has become a significant cause for concern.
According to international media reports, despite the surge in violent activities by cartels in Mexico, FIFA has refused to relocate the World Cup matches from the country.
The unrest intensified following a recent military operation in which the notorious drug cartel chief, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes—famously known as “El Mencho”—was killed. In the wake of his death, cartels have launched retaliatory attacks, leading to the postponement of several local football matches.
However, FIFA President Gianni Infantino maintains his stance, insisting that he has full confidence in Mexico’s ability to host the World Cup. He affirmed that matches will not be moved elsewhere despite the ongoing volatility.
