Col. Amin Malik remembered: A vision that remains relevant to Pakistan golf
LAHORE: Some people serve institutions; others leave behind ideas that continue to shape them long after they are gone. Col. Amin Malik belonged to the latter.
At a remembrance gathering at Lahore Garrison Golf Club, organised by Brig (R) Mehmood Bajwa, family, friends and golfers came together to remember a man whose contribution to Pakistan golf went far beyond the positions he held.
Col. Malik, who passed away on 19th August 2026, served for 12 years with the Pakistan Golf Federation and helped lay the foundations of organised golf in the country. Brig. Bajwa recalled how, decades ago, he recognised the importance of separating amateur and professional golf and believed in rules and systems designed to streamline playing standards and facilitate golfers.
Perhaps Col. Malik explained his philosophy best himself. Dr. Asma Shami quoted him: “My guiding principle at the PGF was that the Federation is there to facilitate, serve and support the associations, clubs and players. The question should always be: how can we help? It certainly should not be there to discourage or create bottlenecks.
Retardation is a word that does not exist in my dictionary. Most importantly, I tried my level best to uphold merit. The moment merit is compromised, we lose our direction and move away from the path of progress.”
Khawaja Pervaiz Syed, associated with Col. Malik for nearly 30 years, recalled his concern for professional golfers and the underprivileged. He extended financial and official support to those in need and believed professional golfers deserved access to clubhouse facilities and the respect earned through talent and achievement.
His daughter, Dr. Amina Malik, herself a golfer, recalled that her father had two families, one at home and the other on the golf course. Following his passing, caddies whom he had helped came forward to share memories and express gratitude for his kindness and generosity.
Chief guest Gen Arshad Mahmood, HI(M) (Retd.) recalled that the ideas put forward by Col. Malik some 30 years ago are now regarded as important measures for the development and promotion of golf.
Born on 27 December 1937. Col. Amin Malik, leaves behind a lasting legacy of integrity and a transformative influence on the development of golf in Pakistan! The gathering concluded with Fateha. Col. Amin Malik may have left the golf course for the last time, but the principles he championed remain relevant to Pakistan golf today.
