Germany Make History, Beat Spain to Win Back-to-Back Hockey World Cups
By Nawaz Gohar ; Germany have successfully defended their men’s Hockey World Cup crown, edging Spain 1–0 in a tense final to claim their fourth world title and further cement their place among the giants of international hockey.
The defending champions produced a disciplined performance at the Belfius Hockey Arena on Sunday, surviving sustained Spanish pressure before Michel Struthoff delivered the decisive moment with 80 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
The result gives Germany back-to-back World Cup titles and moves them level with Pakistan on four championships, the joint-most in the history of the men’s competition.
Spain started the final with ambition but found Germany difficult to break down. The Germans looked the more commanding side during the opening quarter, although Spain gradually increased the pressure as the match progressed.
Jean-Paul Danneberg proved crucial in the German goal. The goalkeeper produced a particularly important save to deny Borja Lacalle during the second quarter, helping Germany reach half-time with the scores locked at 0–0.
Spain came out aggressively after the interval and created several opportunities, but Germany’s defensive structure continued to hold firm.
Then came the match-defining moment.
With just 80 seconds left in the third quarter, Germany found an opening from their only circle entry of the period. Struthoff moved across the face of goal and finished into an unguarded net after Spain’s goalkeeper had committed early.
It was a clinical strike in a match where chances had been at a premium.
Spain refused to surrender. The Red Sticks continued to push forward and generated further circle entries, but Germany’s defence repeatedly shut the door.
With less than four minutes remaining, Spain removed their goalkeeper in an attempt to create an extra attacking player and force an equaliser. Germany, however, remained composed under pressure and protected their narrow advantage until the final whistle.
The victory also completed a remarkable tournament for Germany, who conceded only seven goals throughout their World Cup campaign. Christopher Rühr was named Player of the Match after another influential display for the champions.
For Spain, the defeat ended an impressive run to their first World Cup final since 1998. They had reached the title match after producing one of the tournament’s biggest shocks, defeating hosts and Olympic champions the Netherlands 4–3 in the semi-final.
But against Germany, Spain could not find the finishing touch when it mattered most.
Germany’s latest triumph is particularly significant: they have now won the men’s World Cup four times and become the first team to secure back-to-back titles on two separate occasions.
Their latest championship confirms that the German hockey machine remains firmly at the summit of the international game.
