ISLAMABAD: By Nawaz Gohar ; Under the ambitious framework of the ‘Islamabad School Sports Year,’ the Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP), in collaboration with the Islamabad Athletics Association (IAA), officially inaugurated the ‘Kids Athletics’ program at Jinnah Stadium on Tuesday.
The initiative is a cornerstone of the ‘Kids Sports Week’ project envisioned by Federal Secretary of Education, Mohiuddin Ahmed Wani. The program aims to institutionalize a vibrant sports culture across educational institutions in the federal capital.
The opening ceremony was graced by Federal Secretary Mohiuddin Ahmed Wani as the Chief Guest. Highlighting the critical link between physical activity and cognitive development, the Secretary welcomed the participants with a landmark announcement: all international-standard facilities at Jinnah Stadium will now be available to children free of cost.
Furthermore, Secretary Wani emphasized the implementation of a modern Data Management System to track and nurture emerging talent, ensuring that future champions are identified and supported through professional pathways.
The first phase of the program saw a balanced participation of 600 boys and 600 girls from various Model Schools and Colleges across Islamabad. Participating institutions hailed from diverse sectors, including Dhok Gangal, Tarlai, Thanda Pani, Jhang Syedan, and G-6.
The technical execution of the event is being led by Madam Nabeela Kamran, Pakistan’s Lead Practitioner for the World Athletics Kids Program. The Director General of the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) also extended full administrative and logistical support to ensure the event’s success.
Scheduled to run until April 16, 2026, the event distinguishes itself through its commitment to inclusivity. In a significant move, the administration confirmed that upcoming sessions will feature students from Madrasas (religious schools) and Special Education Centers, creating a truly comprehensive sporting environment.
This initiative is now a permanent fixture on the Athletics Federation’s annual calendar, serving as a vital platform to promote healthy competition and physical well-being among the youth of Pakistan.
