PSL considers new ‘Drauction’ System Amid Resistance from Legacy Franchises
By Nawaz Gohar: Ahead of its 11th season, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is weighing the implementation of a hybrid recruitment model dubbed “Drauction” (a blend of Draft and Auction).
According to global cricket reports, the proposed system aims to combine elements of both the traditional player draft and a financial auction. While the league has relied solely on the draft system for its first ten seasons, the potential shift comes as the league prepares to welcome two new franchises: Hyderabad and Sialkot.
During a meeting held on Friday, representatives from all eight franchises discussed player retentions and the feasibility of the ‘Drauction’ model. Following the session, a working group was established to deliberate further before a final decision is reached.
Sources indicate a clear divide among stakeholders. The two new franchises are pushing for minimal player retentions to ensure a deeper pool of top-tier talent for their debut squads.
Conversely, several established franchises remain opposed to the auction-style format. This has left the PSL management with the complex task of balancing player loyalty for existing teams while providing a fair playing field for the newcomers.
The PSL administration has already confirmed that Season 11 will commence on March 26. In a separate development, the PCB has reversed its previous stance on the ownership of Multan Sultans, deciding to put the franchise back up for auction. Technical bids for the team are expected by the end of the month.
