WAPDA discontinues three sports disciplines, recalls athletes to duty
By Nawaz Gohar ; In a sudden organizational shift, the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Sports Board has officially issued a notification shutting down three of its major sports divisions: baseball, softball, and netball.
The directive, which takes effect immediately, applies to both men’s and women’s teams, leaving dozens of national-level athletes and technical staff in distress. According to the issued notification,
all players and coaches associated with the three sports have been instructed to report back to their parent administrative duties, effectively ending their sports releases starting August 18.
Critically, the official notification provides no specific explanation or policy justification for the abrupt closure of these departments.
This unexpected shutdown follows a similar structural withdrawal by the organization, which recently decided to opt out of participating in the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) domestic cricket structure.
The move has raised serious concerns among local sports analysts regarding WAPDA’s long-term commitment to national sports development.
