On this final day of the World Athletics Championships Oregon 22, we must start at the end.
The USA closed their most successful championships in history (33 medals) with a dream gold for both the men and the women in the 4x400m. The first World Athletics Championships on home soil couldn’t have ended in a more glorious way.
We were treated to not one, but two world records – first Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan ran 12.12 to win her 100m hurdles semifinal before getting gold in the final in a wind-assisted time of 12.06, and then Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis added one centimetre to his own world pole vault record, clearing 6.21m to take his first outdoor world title.
Athing Mu had to fight until the very end to win another important gold for USA in the women’s 800m, while Jakob Ingebrigtsen added the 5000m title to his 1500m silver from five days earlier.
In the decathlon, France’s world record-holder Kevin Mayer was crowned king for the second time. Germany’s Malaika Mihambo retained her long jump title with a 7.12m leap, while Massimo Stano added the world 35km race walk title to his Olympic victory over 20km in Tokyo.
