Major Mission Launched to Revive Weightlifting in Pakistan
Arshad Khan Turk assigned key responsibility; important meeting with DG Sports Board Yawar Hussain; international and Asian federations assure full cooperation
ISLAMABAD: A major initiative has been launched to revive weightlifting in Pakistan and address the challenges facing the sport at national and international levels.
President of the Masters Weightlifting Federation Pakistan, Arshad Khan Turk, has been assigned an important responsibility to help revive the sport, strengthen international coordination and promote weightlifting in the country.
In this connection, Arshad Khan Turk held an important meeting with Director General Pakistan Sports Board Yawar Hussain in Islamabad. The meeting discussed in detail the challenges confronting weightlifting in Pakistan, measures for the development of the sport and a future strategy for its revival.
It was also decided during the meeting to constitute a three-member committee to address key issues related to the sport, improve coordination with international organisations and work towards strengthening weightlifting activities in Pakistan.
As part of these efforts, a Pakistani delegation led by Arshad Khan Turk also visited Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where important meetings were held with senior officials of the international and Asian weightlifting federations.
The delegation met International Weightlifting Federation President Mohamed Jalood, Asian Weightlifting Federation President Yousuf Al Mana and Secretary Saif Harbi. During the meetings, the challenges facing weightlifting in Pakistan, the restructuring of the federation, international cooperation and measures for the promotion and development of the sport were discussed in detail.
The international and Asian officials appreciated the efforts being made for the revival of weightlifting in Pakistan and assured the Pakistani delegation that the international and Asian federations would extend their cooperation and work closely with Pakistan.
The Asian Weightlifting Federation also assured its full cooperation for the successful holding of the Asian Masters Weightlifting Championship, scheduled to be held in Pakistan in October.
Sports circles have welcomed the development, describing it as a positive step towards the revival of weightlifting in Pakistan.
They expressed hope that sustained efforts at both national and international levels would help restore Pakistan’s position in the sport and provide new opportunities for Pakistani weightlifters on the international stage.
